No surprises there, but it did raise an eyebrow last month when AMI told me the premium for a just acquired automatic Peugeot HDI diesel (for long distance commuter duties you understand). When I asked why it was so high I was told it was beacuse this model was flagged as 'high risk of theft'. As if any self respecting boy racer would be seen dead....

Mmm, missus just had an AMI quote for a Peugeot diesel at a crazy $750 (Full NCB discount, mature lady, decent suburb, garaged) AMI said "You should see the quote if it was for Auckland".No surprises there, but it did raise an eyebrow last month when AMI told me the premium for a just acquired automatic Peugeot HDI diesel (for long distance commuter duties you understand). Crikey... I got off light with $505 then. Also full NCB, not garaged but up a long driveway in rural area. Of course we don't have as many boy racers up this way lusting after the mighty pug diesel power...
ETA.. did you end up getting a more reasonable quote? I tried a couple of others but they weren't much different.

No, phoned around, nothing cheaper. Tower wanted nearly $1000, Fintel quoted 8 something. She opted for TPFT at just under $300.Edited by Omerta on Tuesday 31st August 22:53
The rise in premiums seems colossal. If it's $750 a year comprehensive for a 40+ year old woman to insure a $20k diesel Peugeot how much are the teens paying for their WRX's?

Not quite a teen anymore but when I bought a $12k Legacy GTB at 23 I was initially paying $880 PA from memory (with full NCB). Dropped by a couple of hundred a year later, hopefully another drop next time now that I've passed the magic number 25 (and apparently become instantly responsible).Edited by GravelBen on Wednesday 1st September 10:44
My recent full cover, full NCB quotes with AMI have been:
$505 for a 2004 Peugeot diesel valued at $7k.
~$300 for a 2004 Nissan ute valued at $14k.
~$300 for a 2003 Golf GTI at $16k.
The only reason I can think they would ping the Peugeot so much is
- Turbo in a saloon = boy racer vehicle
- Peugeots parts are expensive here
- It's different to 'normal' cars and therefore risky
I reckon it's the Turbo in a saloon shape that they're reacting to.

So, it's a Peugeot thing? It still doesn't add up.
My S2000 was only $400 Fully Comp (2006, $40k value, mature, garage, blah blah) and my ED 30 GTI was $380 (3 years ago, brand new, $60k value).
Can a Peugeot engine/gearbox/front wing/bumper really cost that much more than a VW one? And what about that Cayenne quote above, that's not gonna be a cheap car to fix.
And as for parts prices, it's not like they are insuring you against breakdowns is it.
Cayenne man, who are you insured with? That's a cheap quote.

I think the list is swayed.
they said they compared how many claims were made per how many cars they had on their books.
sounds like a percentage thing. to a honda torneo if say they only have 1000 on their books and 100 get stolen that's going to rate higher than the 10,000 corolla's when 900 get stolen. I thiink that's how the randoms have snuck in.

To make you feel better what yours costs...
My younger brother just picked himself up an S14 Silvia (bog standard NA, automatic - not even remotely 'boyracer') for $3k, and TPFT insurance is costing him close to $500 PA.

might be cheaper if he hadn't written off the last car though

I've got my two Skylines insured through State.
My turbo R32 GTS-4 sedan costs about $400 a year and is insured for $6,000 (well, a bit less since they devalue it each year...). Only mod to it is the 3" exhaust, otherwise it is literally bog standard.
And my wee R32 GTS coupe is insured for just under $6k again (grr), and i'm paying about $450 a year for that. Thats had A LOT of things done to it - professional tints, aftermarket; suspension, shocks, wheels, exhaust, extractors, air intake, bodykit (well, from another type of Skyline), swaybars, stereo, steering wheel, pedals etc etc, plus a recent repaint of the whole car and so on.
Of course, i'm over 25 (nearly 28 now) and have a 100% clean driving history (driving for over ten years, had the turbo Skyline nearly six years now) and its never parked on the street overnight etc.
Here's a vid of the previous owner taking it around the old Taupo track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2wY5V7_TQw
So far i've only entered it in a few drag race events (Taieri and Alexandra last year) but hope to make it up to Levels one day!
But yeah, the Mongrel Mob i'm pretty sure are the ones most responsible for stealing cars - they'll normally have a car completely gutted in just a couple of hours...
