Hi all, i'm looking to come an do a year in queenstown (having just dont a year in whistler, canada - canadas queenstown) and i was hoping i could get a car this time. My question is, how does this not needing insurance thing work? If i rear end someone whos driving a ferrari, i would assume i'm $200k out of pocket? Or do people in new zealand just claim off their own insurance regardless of fault?

Thanks

(also, sorry if this has been covered, the search button is broken)

Hi there - yes, the Ferrari Driver will claim on his own insurance company, who will them pursue you to the grave to repay the debt. Insurance is cheap here compared to the UK, so you'd be advised to at least get third party.

...and not only is it comparatively cheap vs UK, but, as incentive for full cover, difference between cost for 3rd party and full cover is often negligible.
