Hi folks,
Looks like We'll be moving to Wellington within the next 3 months, all going well.
Desperately want to bring my TVR and my Wife wants to bring her Golf.
Where do we start???
Both of us have owned the cars, in our own names, for well over a year so I don't think that will be a problem.
I'm booking the Chimaera into Raceproved this week for an inspection. Is there anything in particular to look for.
Any thing I should have them do while they have it up in the air?

All and any advice greatly appreciated, and cant wait to get there.

Hi Mick,
Glad to have another TVR over here.Chassis condition and no rust is vital. A high stop light can be fitted over here and brake lines etc may need to be changed depending on type. ALL that can be done over here.Just make sure that both cars coming are really well cleaned & vacumed free of everything, including up under the front guards etc. We can put you in touch with other TVR Club members who are in Wellington or you may want to send the car up to Jim in Auckland who will get it all complied for you.We have 2 other similar blue Chims that have just gone through compliance..!!
PM me or post again when you are over here.
Regards Brendon

...don't quite see the point of bringing a Golf, though. Check out trademe.co.nz and see what similar spec ones go for here-will give you a chance to do your sums and make your choice

Tip.... use the advanced search | expired listings option to see what prices things actually sell for as asking prices are often unrealistic.

Would tend to agree on the golf. Theres plenty of all spec Golf's around for reasonable money, Id be surprised if it was worthwhile.

Would be great to see another TVR in Wellington though smile

Great news, another sports car to go for a drive with, the run for wine will be fun this summer!

I imported my car through Wellington a year or so ago, happy to answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for the replies folks.
Bringing the Golf as it took an age to find the right one. She loves it and wants to bring it, who am I to argue.

Ill have both cars, jet washed, and up on a ramp to make sure everything is nice and clean..
The chassis on the Tiv is in good condition, over the last 4 winters I have scrubbed it back to get rid of any rust and hammerite'd it.
I will do it all again before packing it away. Any tips on coatings, is hammerite ok, what about waxoil?

Whats the score with brake's?
I have braided line fitted and grooved discs. Do these need to be changed back to originals?
Do I need to go back to the original exhaust set up also?
I have cherry bombs where the silencer was.

Ive got loads of questions to come i'm sure and so looking forward to getting there.

Send the car direct to Auckland and get Jim to handle the compliance. This will be fastest and cheapest way to enjoy your car in NZ.

His email is gamsby@xtra(dot)co(dot)nz

Also in case the new owner of the Orange Ceb ex Japan thats headed for Chch happens to be reading my advice is also to send your car via Jim. If anyone else knows who the lucky owner is I would like to make contact.

I have braided hoses on my Chimp. They changed the rules a couple of years back - they used to have to have a compliance tag on them, but now they just need to be crimped correctly. Grooved discs - don't think that matters - I have drilled.

Exhaust is a tricky one - technically an exhaust shouldn't have been modified to make it any louder than the standard ex-factory exhaust. However, all the ricers over here have big bore exhausts and no one knows what an ex-factory standard TVR would sound like - so you should be OK unless you hit an ar*se of a compliance inspector. I have straight through pipes and my exhaust makes a hell of a racket with serious pops and crackles on the overrun and I just get lots of positive comments from mechanics I use for Warrant of Fitness.

Take CRMS advice and go through Jim at the TVR Club. He knows the process and knows good compliance inspectors. I went through a local good mechanic, but got stuffed by one as the inspector demanded a full body off inspection in order to be able to inspect a rust patch in my chassis where the power coating had started to perish. Ended up with the whole chassis being resprayed, even though there was no actual rust - I just had to remove the powder coating to prove it. I'm sure that I might have had better success with Jim helping me.

Make sure you check out http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/importing/index.ht... for the Golf. If it's a late model one it'll probably be fine, but you don't want to get tripped up...

Don't let me put you off. However any alterations to the chassis, including painting, requires a repair certificate (I think invoices to show repair are required). The chassis will also need to be immaculate... seriously. My Cerb (2003, the best chassis Rob Ingleby had seen on any Cerb) was failed on some burned powdercoat where the exhaust comes in close approximation. If your chassis has had any repair work at all its a nightmare to get certed.

If you are bringing in a TVR don't consider anyone else for the job other than Jim. He certainly knows how to work the system to ensure the TVR is road compliant in short order.

I'd also watch shipping companies. Several will not ship if you have insurance external to thier own policy. Thier policy won't cover anything in a car over 5 years old that isn't total loss (and even then I don't know if you'll be able to complete a claim). I learned of this very last minute and my Cerb was unfortunately shipped uninsured.

Thanks for the advice.
The chassis has'nt had any alterations or repairs, I have done the usual when powder coating has peeled and stripped it back and painted it by hand.
The Tiv is booked in this week to Raceproved who are going to inspect the chasis for me, and I could ask for a certificate/or invoice to help, what to you think?

thanks for the tip with insurance.

I should get my official job offer this week, once that lands Ill be able to get the ball rolling with the removals companies etc, and have a better idea of arrival time.
Ill contact Jim this week for his advice as well.

For NZ cert, chassis painting is considered a repair.
