Have to chuckle at their comment about Monster's Pikes Peak Suzuki:

article said:
In its numerous outings, this vehicle has not only set, but smashed the Piles Peak International Hill Climb record, and continues to do so today in its most recent iteration.
It took 13 years until he broke Rod Millen's 1994 record, and only beat it by 2.6 seconds! With half of the road sealed by now, I wouldn't call that 'smashed' personally.

The whole article reads like it was written by a gran turismo fan with access to wikipedia really. wink

But you'll be happy to know the Saab makes it onto more well-researched lists as well!

I will (I'm easily pleased). Actually, I'd have the Stratos , given the choice.

Rod Millen is a very talented nutter. To take an old CORR offroad racing truck. Simply pull one of the spring packs (not even replace it) and run up and down the "race to the sky" compeditively was fantastic to see. Especially as the thing is only driven by a little 4ltr NA engine. I'd love to see him play in his old stomping ground in Ashley again. Wonder if he wants to tootle in my Cosworth V6 twin turbo?

As for greatest rally cars.... My vote will have to unfortunately fall to the Stratos, although I also have a place in my heart for the last of the sexy rally cars. The Toyota Celica ST205.

yes

The Stratos does have a certain fundaMental coolness about it - though apparently as twitchy as a schizophrenic on crack, even Bjorn Waldegaard said it was a scary car to drive!

I still have a thing for Mk2 Escorts ahhh BDA cloud9

FWIW the Octane mag 'greatest rally cars' article consisted of the following, one chosen from from each era (but with a bit of crossover):

Saab 96 Sport
Mini Cooper S
Porsche 911 T
Mk2 Escort RS1800
Lancia Stratos
Audi Sport Quattro
Subaru Impreza 555

Article was full of brilliant quotes from top class drivers, including some bloke talking about taking sandwiches in the Saab for stages with long straights.

I can't believe they included a Mitsi in that list, and there's no mention of the Delta integrale! But I am very very biased, seeing as I own a Fulvia coupe and Delta integrale.

Yeah here's the 'Grale, my baby. The 8v shouldn't have the spoiler but I like the look, and it's not original anymore seeing as it's been converted to RHD anyway. It's my daily driver, I have ome lowering springs for it but not sure I want to fit them, ride is fairly stiff anyway, and I want to keep my fillings. Only thing I'm not happy with is the tow bar fitted by the PO. Handy for the bike rack though.

The Fulvia is a series 2 coupe, in millions of pieces all over the garage being restored, hopefully only a couple of years away, budget willing, and providing I don't find other things to spend my money on. Of course I'd love a Stratos, I'd trade my left but and first born for one.

Lovely car - I must own another one day, one of my all time favourites, and the only car I regret selling.

Mine was an early 16V, tuned by Van Arken Developments just as they moved to Bracknell before they moving to the Transport Research Laboratory in Crowthorne and dealing with the "chav" market. Richard Thorne classics was also local to me at the time, and so it was way to easy to spend money on...

How well are they supported in NZ?

Not too bad, I've had a little trouble with headlights, but have figured out which RHD Fiat's and Lancia's light will fit. Local Italian parts suppliers are good for general consumables, cam belts etc, but if I need anything more specific I've found a couple of people in Germany that are good to deal with, post very quickly and seem to have everything you could ever need. Postage is reasonable from Ze Germans too, better than Italy.

It'll be a sad day if I ever sell this one, I can safely say I won't, but I said that about my Volumex coupe, and that went after owning it for 14 years, but to buy the integrale.

I would like to drive a 16v to see if I could feel the difference in the torque split.

There's a nice 8v on trademe at the moment, I've seen the car, it's pretty good, and it's last owner, owns an Italian car service centre in Christchurch, it's been looked after. Go on, you know you want to. There are six 8v's in NZ, about twelve 16v's and four Evo's.

Oh yeah, and back on topic, six WRC championship wins for the Delta, and 11 for Lancia, and they only got the Stratos in the list! People are probably all Delta'd out when it comes to those rally lists.

What mods had you done?

Hi Leyton, I think we've met before, at a Fiat Lancia club run to Waiau, you had your TVR, I was in a silver Lancia Volumex coupe chasing you and another TVR through the hills. Did you get out to the track day on the weekend? It's the first one I've missed for a while, but had a lot on. I met Jared on the Latin by the Lakes Italian car rally last year, it's a nice car, shame he's selling it. No I haven't seen the painted up car, bet it looks good. I only knew of one other integrale in CHC and it's a red 8v too.
