How much is involved in getting a deregistered car back on the road again?

Is it just a matter of normal WOF inspection, pay the registration fee clicky and you're away laughing, or is it a more involved inspection process?

Just assessing the bargain potential of a prospective acquisition...

No, have to go through a compliance centre. Pretty much the same as importing a car. Ergo if it doesn't meet frontal impact and emissions standards then you can't reregister it, even if it was registered before.... unless you can claim SIV, classic or LVV exemption.

Ah, bugger. This is what I'm being tempted by for a cheap toy:

But it probably doesn't meet any of those categories.

Or then again, maybe it would work... looks like different requirements for that class of vehicle.

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/classes-standards/...

Pretty sure it fits in class MC, which means frontal impact rules only apply to post 2003 vehicles, thats one thing out of the way. Time to research emissions requirements... scratchchin

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/importing/step-one...

So (to make sure I'm reading things right) anything post-1990 has to meet [ADR 79/01; Euro 3; Japan 00/02; or US2001] but pre-1990 it wouldn't matter?

How would you find out if a vehicle meets those standards, or is it a fair assumption that anything pre-2000 doesn't? Do they just check if that model has the right emissions code somewhere, or actually test the emissions of the specific vehicle?

Full of stupid questions tonight aren't I! rolleyes

Its a bit tricky figuring out exactly what applies as a lot of the NZTA info refers to 'vehicles entering NZ' - this is already in NZ and has been registered before, but I suppose they treat it the same as a new arrival.

Emissions levels can be hard to obtain. MOST things pre 2000 won't meet Euro 3 (or equiv.). Elise S1s don't (nor do Exiges) and that's the reason I leapt into importing the Exige in '07, as I couldn't have imported one (although could just about swing one through SIV now)

Not really in the same league as a Lotus, its a $1k 4wd thats realistically worth $4-6k in good condition - so if I could get it shipshape it would be a tidy wee profit margin when the time came to sell, but it would mainly be a cheap toy and there's only so much hassle these things are worth.

Apparently you can apply for an exemption if a vehicle meets some but not all of the required standards click which could be worth looking into, though I wouldn't be overly confident of getting one from our noble(cough) bureaucrats.

Hypothetically if it either does meet emissions standards or I could get an exemption, what does compliancing generally cost?

That's one of those "How long is a piece of string?" questions.

It's not like a WoF or Rego where there is a set table of fees.

I would be inclined to contact the compliance place you intend to use and ask them specifically what they would want to look at (for that particular vehicle) and how much it is likely to cost.

Nope. Frontal impact and emissions standards don't apply to vehicles that have previously been registered in NZ. The car will need to go through an entry inspection at a compliance centre (bit more invasive than the WoF), but if the car is on the system already it won't need to show standards compliance.

Just had a chat with the local VTNZ, they confirmed thats correct. For future reference, it costs ~$600 for the entry inspection (or $360 if it turns out to be a NZ-new example), plus $420 for the first rego.

So I'll take a good look at the vehicle and see how much work is needed to get it up to scratch, if I can do that myself on the cheap its a half-price truck. smile

Had a look at it today and decided to pass. Its actually in pretty good condition for the most part but is the version with full-time 4wd and a difflock rather than the one with a proper dual-range transfer case... which I'd be using a lot.

Still, I've learnt how to get a deregistered car back on the road!
