I sold my Golf on TradeMe this week and as part of the deal offered to renew the reg, which is about to expire.

New owner emailed me yesterday to say he'd already done his part of the online change of ownership. A bit keen I thought as no money has changed hands, but no harm done.

So this morning I go into the local NZ Post shop and fill in in the registration renewal form, hand it over the counter, and get told "I'm sorry, the system says you're not the owner so you can't renew the registration. Unless you want to do it in the new owner's name....?" Um, no thanks.

I called the guy who's bought it and there's no problem, we'll sort it out when we do the deal. But it seems very wrong to me that a person who knows nothing except the reg plate can fill in an online form which as far as 'the system' is concerned allows him to take immediate ownership, and stops me from being able to renew the registration on a car that I still own.

I've half a mind to do some fast laps past Wellington's best performing speed camera and let the bureaucracy sort that out.

Yeah, while there's two parts to the change of ownership (buyers and sellers). The sellers part is almost redundant, the actual change of ownership is actioned on the buyers part.

I can imagine if challenged though it'd be pretty easy to dispute and change back to its rightful owner if it was abused... although this IS NZ where I'm sure some bureaucratic idiot would find a way to make it as difficult as possible.

Registration is not proof of ownership anyway. We only tend to call them "Ownership Papers" but they are not. Classic example is a finance companies interest even though the car is not registered to them during the time it is being paid for. The only true proof of ownership is a receipt.
