I got emailed this the other day - Any of you heard much about this? Could be starter smile

If you're a petrol head with an awesome cruiser then January the 9th 2010 should be marked off on your calendar and you had better be with us as we set of on our first ever (soon to be annual) Cannonball Run 2010.

This one day event will start on Saturday Morning at Albany's "The Albany Bar" by the old Albany Hill (Maps will be available if you're not familiar with the area) at around 7.30am with the teams setting off on a adventure of a lifetime with nothing but a car load of rowdy mates, a tank full of unleaded and a map (Handed out on the day) with various "Missions" that must be completed on the way down to Rotorua where we stop and wait for the rest of the "Ballers" to turn up, we will have a quick laugh at what people have done and encountered along the way plus a bit of lunch before we mission back to Albany where the Run will finish when the last car crosses the line.

Now of course there's a lot more happening on the day than we're letting on but if we told you guys everything it wouldn't be as much fun.

The Cannonball Run is a time based event, you will be given a certain time to arrive at a certain place, if your to early or to late your penalised, it pays for you to stick to the speed limit (We dont encourage speeding), at the end of the Run we check everyone's arrival times and mission accomplishments and tally a score. The overall points winner will receive the "Big Baller" trophy and more importantly bragging rights for the year, if there is a tie then the crowd will decide the overall winner, second place will receive the much loved "Just Not Good Enough" award and be showered in cheer's and love (But nothing of value because your Just Not Good Enough).

At just $65 per ticket (that's $16.25 each if you have four people in the car) you can't get better value for money than this.

If your Balling in the latest Austin Martin or just rocking the Honda Civic you don't need to worry about your car getting damaged buy our stickers, we have sourced special "Temporary" vehicle stickers that are designed to go on and come off again easy as, you can even leave them on for up to two years and they will still come off easy.

Sounds like fun. If I add that to my January calendar with KIC and festival of Racing it would make every weekend full.

It sounds more like a treasure hunt but could be a fun day

Now if it was New York to LA non stop
To quote Dan Gurney "at no stage did we exceed 175 miles per hour"

or second best

Yip ditto mate, I should be back from the south island by then so this event could slot in rather nice. Not interested if its just a chavy ricer hoon. I emailed the organiser and promises me the ricer crowed wont be allowed in and theres a list of worthy motors that have their names down already. scratchchin

I'd be a little skeptical about the quality of entries given they mention rocking the Honda Civic, the fact that the entry is "only" $65 and they are suggesting filling the car up to share the cost and their spelling/grammar isn't the best. Maybe I'm being a little judgmental but it didn't leave me with a great first impression.

Yes you are being a little judgemental wink but sadly I also think you are probably correct. It just doesn't sound like a class event.

Given the low entry fee and the propensity of yoof to show up to this event, I think I'll be steering clear.

It's hardly cannonball when you've a bunch of stboxes turning up... Cannonball is all about the baller status.

Something like the devil's run they hosted a couple years back is more like it.

Also, given the fact they are timing it, I am sure it will attract more than its share of idiots, probably the typical crowd at a D1 event and the like. The route is not a great driving one either, making it appear even more as a chance for chavs in imports to ass about on public roads, rather than some proper petrolheads enjoying swift, enjoyable and fairly safe progress

Hi guys, some people have already seen some of these pics already. I was invited in another car, so didn’t take my own this time. What can I say, was the best event I have done in ages, probably 150+ cars. This was properly organised! There was a real mixture of cars and personalities which was fantastic. Everyone got into the spirit of it and had a blast. The cops were on the case ensuring we got out of Auckland in a safe mannor wink Counted 11 cops placed between Albany and Hampton Downs !!! Did some of the same stretch of road yesterday and didn’t see one cop!!! hehe After talking to some of the people who bought out their serious toys, they will be coming back also. The run kept you busy and there was loads of missions to complete and stuff to find to keep everyone thinking. I had a fantastic fun team so I was lucky and we completed it in good time.

Wow, now there's a suprise.

Everyone kicks the st out of the event before it starts and it turns out to be an absolute corker.

Glad I kept my thoughts to myself.

Looked like a great day out Kylie.

Sorry mate but I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. It turned out a great event. Awesome that's great to hear and good work to those that organized it. I just called it as I saw it and from a professional business perspective that promotion didn't entice me one bit. I've been to one too many events when some clown in his Honda wants to prove himself doing some crazy pass risking everything in the process. Bad grammar in an advert at that level is not the normal IMO. The bottom line is though that the event was a success. That's great for those that attended, those that ran it and for pistonheads in general. If it means that I or others are wrong in the process then I'm o.k with that smile

I think that's hardly "kicking the st out of it" though.

BTW it's SURPRISE tongue out

I'm sorry, but you still wouldn't have caught me within 100km of an event like that. I've heard a couple of participants did runners from police, so it seems there was still a knob-element involved.

I (along with alot of help) ran and organised this event.

First off this was the first major event I have taken full control of and the feed back from everyone (including the police) is it was a well run and very fun day. I thank all that attended and all the sponsors involved. The rumors of people out running the police are being looked into and anyone reported on will be banned from future events. We had every one sign an aggreement they would obay all road rules, but in every group there's always some one. Even beach hop and Americana have had issues with this in their years (this can't be put down to 'boy racers' it is just an unfortunate part of the car culture) over all though everyone had a great day the weather was awsome and we are sorting out the winners this week and starting to organise the next one. Considering over 100 cars travelled 600 odd kay's on public roads and I only know of 3 insodents of stupid driving it's pretty succesfull in my book.
I welcome any ideas suggestions and any offers of help. To quote our web site 'rather than just stand back while kids are getting their licenses taken off them and their cars impounded we decided to be part of the solution' the hot rodders and older petrol heads are (and on the day were) a good influence on the younger generation showing them you can just cruise and still have a great time.

I look forward to see you everyone next year. if you have any feed back good or bad I welcome you to email me

Gator@Aucklandmotorsport.co.nz

Thanks Again

Hey welcome to the Forum! Thanks for running a great event. I wouldnt worry about what some of these people think, they never organise anything and quick to moan - so typical. I know how hard it is to string together a successful event. However like most I was unsure what sort of cars would be at this one and the ricer scene is just not for me. Thankfully I had the opportunity to pilot and passenger in a new Golf GTi this time so we went a little un noticed and just took it all in.

I think based on what I heard from the high end specialist car owners they will be back and I bet they bring their friends with similar cars. So on that note you could afford to be fussy and up the entry fee and people need to apply to be accepted kind of thing. That way you can weed out the chavy racers and give the event a better image. Getting quality vehicles next year and vibrant personalities I doubt will be a problem. I did a late hoon last night in my friends DB9 who will be coming next year also + throw in a few more Esprits!

Now please make this photo win for best sticker placement. wink We wasted 30mins organising this biggrin
