Hello fellow kiwi PH'ers.

I'm recently back home after 20 odd years in the West Island (where I have a GT3) and am thinking about basing myself back here in godzone for a while. Whilst I'm not looking for a car just yet (have a nice subaru justy - 255K and going fine) I wouldn't mind getting some pork over here (as well as my car in Aus) at some stage. I've noticed these cars have been for sale on trademe for ages and was wondering if there is some history to them as to why they are not selling (or is it just price)? I know there are a couple of dodgy Ruf's floating around.

Am I right to be wary of any low milage imports or is that just being cynical - I'd get a car fully checked ot anyway so I could assertain the correct milage.

Just interested in anyones comments.

The Yellow GT2 is John Allen's and its a stunner. Its about 30 minutes from where I live.

The Black GT2 is my good friend Roberts. We went on a road trip to Auckland early this year in it to the Concourse De-Elegance and we shared the driving there and back. It's a ballistic car and both this and the Yellow GT2 are great buying. These car are worth more and should be more but due to the economy they are below their true value.

A good example is the 996TT. A few months ago there were a few for under $100k now that have risen to above $100k.

The silver 993TT I have not seen in person but have heard great reports about it. At the asking price it's no bargain but probably market price. There's also a blue one on there as well.

As your probably aware the 993 will be more agricultural than the 996 and not as up to date (no digital air, cup holders etc)

Lastly just make sure you get a good PPI. In Auckland I would recommend Motor-science. Wellington use Powerhaus and Christchurch use Autothority. If you post up here I will try and check them out for you. Small country and all there's not a lot of cars someone doesn't know about.

Be very, very careful should you buy something a little bit rare or exotic over here as there is virtually no back up.
The only genuine RUF cars (993 shape) that I know of in NZ have both been written off in the last 12 months

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm not looking to buy at the moment as I have not fully committed to base myself in NZ yet, but it sure is good to be home. I will be keeping my GT3 in Aus as I still anticipate spending a bit of time over there (also got a 2002 Monaro which I can't bear to part with for some strange reason), so my little Subaru will do for now, but I am sure that I will get the hankering for Porsche over here, although it will be a bit difficult on the backroads of Northland - and I'm NOT buying a Cayenne.

The cars are much cheaper over here than Oz, but also (to my average eye anyway, and not having looked at any) a whole lot dodgier - especially the imports.

Its true that they are cheaper here than OZ by quite a bit. Both countries have some rare and stunning examples and dogs. Fortunately in NZ the country is so small that not much goes unknown like the 3 RUF's that have been accident damaged.

I don't think as a whole we have a lot of dodgier cars. We do have some imports but a lot of those have fallen into the hands of enthusiast and now have an established service history here in NZ.

Unfortunately IMHO now is the time to buy. Prices have dropped and have rebounded a little. Will they move again or stay at this level is anyone's guess. I think the good cars will creep back up.

Buy with a good PPI and some local knowledge and you should be fine or I could refer you to a well known reputable guy that will take all the hassle out and find and broker you a deal.
