"Four young women have escaped uninjured from a dramatic crash on Nelson's Collingwood St bridge, where a 17-year-old learner-driver flipped a car on to its roof.

Constable Adrian Cupit said the car had been driven on to the bridge from Shakespeare Walk about 3.30pm yesterday. Mr Cupit said no-one had seen the crash.

Senior Constable Phil Wylie said the driver seemed to have driven up the bridge, rather than over it.

"It looks like she has driven up one of the curbed arches and rolled back over."

The four young women were shaken after the accident, and did not want to speak to The Nelson Mail.

The car blocked one lane of the bridge, with passersby amazed no-one had been hurt.

Mr Wylie said inquiries were continuing, but added it was likely charges would be laid.

Nelson Fire Service station officer Kevin O'Connor said there was nobody trapped or injured, so firefighters controlled the scene before handing it over to police.

"It was pretty graphic ... It was a rather weird scene.""

We have an attitude in NZ where a learners or restricted licence is treated by many to be tantamount approval to drive unrestricted. The laughable policing and punishment given to offenders compared to speeders shows that the government gives people tacit approval to do so

$400 fine for breaching the conditions of a learner or restricted licence is more than most speeding fines. Never stopped me when was learning though! tongue out

"Mr Cupit said no-one had seen the crash". -as the driver had her eyes closed at the time

Yeah... but these are SO often let off with warnings by Police (unless you're being a douche already). "I'm just taking my drunk friend home", "My sister was at a party feeling really sick so I had to pick her up"......

I never got caught to find out (benefits of driving a 'family wagon') but I don't recall many schoolmates being let off with a warning. That was 7 or 8 years ago though, it may be different now and probably differs from town to town as well.
