40 ft container from the UK to NZ.
Discussion
Okay gentlemen /gentle women with the exchange rate high and the second hand market of UK parts / cars low it's about my moment to drag back a Cerbera. As mentioned in another thread there is an opportunity for the collective NZ Pistonheads to share shipping costs in a 40ft container. I've dragged several back from the US but nothing back from the UK and wondered if anyone had any shipping connections, who wants in on shipping, and what you're thinking of dragging back (so we can get an idea of space). I'd also like contact from anyone who's completed the import of a UK car before as I'm unaware of the process/foibles.
I'm looking at a Cerbera and spare 4.5 engine. Cerbera is 14 feet long. (bloody heck!)
Spare engine should slot along side the three that Omerta will require to run his car for the next year. (I'm only planning on dragging my car out to polish, not run)

In here, people who have bought cars back from the UK recently and complied them for road use (in the last few years) include Kylie (Esprit 350), KiwiXTR2 (XTR2), Me (Exige) and Omerta (Cerbera LS).
For the compliancing side of things once it gets here. Contact Jim at KW Historics... he and Ken will handle all of that bull$hit for a VERY reasonable fee, and will streamline the process once it gets here.
I've got some shipping contacts for the guys who brought my car over who I can pass on the contacts of if you flick me an e-mail

Make sure the car is properly cleaned. And that means a good steam clean - MAF check the car at the port and get arsy even if they find a blade of grass or a dead fly on the vehicle. You have to have minimal fuel in the car too. I disconnected the battery aswell.
No after market parts really, unless they are like for like replacements (eg adjustable shocks). They particularly don't like braided brake lines if the OEMs were rubber. No harnesses either unless they were OEM.
Other than that, job's a good 'un. Can vouch for Ken - quick, thorough and cheap for certification.

Hi There, im new here (usually post on pelicanparts.com as I live/work in USA part of the year and the rest of the year in New Zealand.
I have a 993 door and some other minor parts sitting in UK. Im looking for anyone bringing back a container to New Zealand in the near future so I can get these 993 parts here to New Zealand.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Regards
Brian

Brian, I'd offered joint shipping based on how I'd shipped race cars previously from the states. However Brendon has pointed me to considerably more economic way of shipping car only from the UK. Unless the parts can be stored internal to the Cerbera I'm dragging over, unfortunately I can't assist. Might I suggest a freight forwarder?
Perhaps someone more familiar with shipping parts from the UK might be able to assist by recommending a forwarder and posting here?

Ah so the plan has been actioned at last? What's the spec?Redmist336 said:

Nah - LS engines are a lot cheaper over here Having said that, I would love to have a standard Cerbera for polishing and Sunday drives. Finding it a bit hard to justify that one though...

Standard Cerbera? It's calling you! Bloody cheap and sexy supercar. And if we drag over a pair the shipping drops by a 100 odd pounds each. Everyone needs at least two. I'm just hoping to start my TVR collection within the next couple of months!!
If you don't mind me asking, how much is the shipping going to cost? I assume it's going on a roll-on, roll-off type ship?
I also assume you've got one of those special interest vehicle limited number exemption thingies from the LTSA to get it in the country and on to the road?
I used to own a Cerbera - a late '97 in silver with black and grey hide. 'Only' a 4.2 but a good one that went like a rocket. I'd have another one tomorrow, fantastic car and soooo cheap in the UK at the moment.

Containerised shipping from the UK is GBP1,690, through Karman Shipping. There are a tonne of substancial additional levies on top of that, then there is GST to pay ontop of it all. However when you're talking of something exocita it's certainly worthwhile.
I'll be dragging a Cerbera in on SIV which means I have to keep it for at least 4 years (I'll be keeping it for substancially longer). I'll probably end up down the same route as Omerta. With an LS in it's belly. However mine will always remain a road car.

Putting an LS in a racer is understandable but a Cerbera is all about the AJP8. It's a fantastic engine and there's been a lot of development done on them to extract some serious HP. Given the cost and hassle of a conversion you'd be better off going down upgrade route in the event of a rebuild. IMHO of course !
I agree.
The reason mine is LS powered and a major project is that under the rules of the day the only chance I saw of getting a TVR onto the road here was by bringing in parts and building something sufficiently unique to be considered scratchbuilt, and therefore not a TVR, and not subject to the bks frontal impact regs of the time.
The glacial progress of my project is evidenced by the fact its been overtaken by the slowest moving thing on the planet... ...bureaucracy! (and George's rebuild!)

Is a collective container still a possibilty?
I left a large quantity of 'stuff' in boxes at a mates house in his attic. Its just record and magazine collections and probably those things I now look for and can't find!
My mate is now selling his house so I need to shift my stuff to another mate, into storage, or ship it here.
Don, is your shipping contact in Devon still around?
time I looked for another 'weekend' car to sneak into the container whilst the $$$ rate is as it is

The chap I used in Devon was 80-odd and had been shipping containers for 60+ years so if he's still alive, he'll still be doing it! I can't recall the name of the co. now but have posted it here before so it may come up with a search. Let me know if you want me to dig it out.
I remember getting the details from you and his quote was done on a typewriter, 1960's style! I did speak to him and knew he's getting on so wondered if he was 'still around'.I chose not to use him as it is all DIY, but in this instance might be all thats needed, thats if a container is still being considered.
