torque of 2zzge
Discussion
Ouch... properly broken it?
Well IMHO the 2ZZ isn't a bad engine, although it does have notorious oiling issues and has been known to suffer oil surge in Elises... I'd be VERY careful if mounting it longitudinally that you pay careful attention to the baffling or fit some kind of dry-sump or oil accumulator to try to negate the effects of surge.
Other than that, they don't seem TOO bad on torque. In the 111Rs I drove, they felt pretty similar to my S1 Elise up until it hit its cam, at which point it goes crazy.
It's hard to tell as the sudden influx of torque on the second cam makes it feel light on torque down low, but in reality it's not really the case.
The major benefit will be weight as it's a good deal lighter than the (I seem to remember cast iron) 3S engine you've got now.
If you're doing a swap like the 2ZZ though, I'd go the whole hog and fit either an SR20VE out of a Nissan, or preferably a F20C out of a Honda S2000. The F20C is a superior motor to the 2ZZ in all respects IMHO... lots of torque, and as much power as you'll ever want More robust too

I don't know if I'd even consider the 2ZZGE to be an upgrade from a 3SGE - the BEAMS version of the 3SGE puts out 210bhp as standard which is 20 more than the 2ZZ. I guess you'll want to stick with Toyota for gearbox compatibility etc but other good options, Nissan SR20VE (200+bhp), Honda F20C (240bhp) as said above, or I think Fraser also use the Mazda KL-ZE which is a sweet-sounding 200bhp 2.5 V6.
ETA: I thought the 3SGE was alloy, whereas the 3SGTE (turbo version) had the iron block? Been wrong before though...

Hey, thanks (!!!!!!) George and Ben. I agree that the Honda motor http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=24... looks very attractive. Downside is that it's tall and so needs dry-sump kit = another 3-4k on top of the 7-8k for the engine. Scott at Fraser Cars estimates a 25k bill by the time all the ancillary bits of engineering are done (remember: I have none of the mechanical aptitude of youzfullas and so this is all that much more expensive for me...) BEAMS engines are good, but still fairly long in the tooth, now. Part of the appeal of the twozee-gee is its comparitive youth, meaning I may be able to find one that hasn't done 100k-odd (not likely with a BEAMS) Also, as George mentions, these are LIGHT! and so, though less grunty than the BEAMS, perhaps more suited to a 7 replica...
...there's always this! (dream, dream...) http://pistonheads.com/sales/1227490.htm

I must admit that mine (K18) feels pretty strong, now the head is sorted.... once I can get it started. Mind you when you haven't driven something that light for 6 months it feels like a rocketship.
Haha... well I've not driven mine in 18 months, and when I get it back working again it'll be lighter than it was and have another 50bhp or so, so should be quite.... ermmm..... sprightly! Edited by Atom Johnny on Saturday 19th September 12:29

Funnily enough I was salivating over just that motor at the Juno stand at the Speed sport show whatsit today....
ssshhhhhh i must say this quietly........
I test drove one of my customers MGF's yesterday after I had serviced it.....I had forgotten how good an engine they are....very "soulfull" too (even in an F) LOL!
I like my Yota lump though especially on secomd cam when it screams with a nice exhaust....more an efficient engineered solution if you know what i mean.
I am sure are others closer than will help, but if you need any info on the engine let me know.

Oh and Roger, I am sure if we wanted too we could have a BBQ at yours and get the engine dropped in....There aooears to be a wealth of knowledge and experience around these parts, in fact the problem could be deciding between soooo many good options and opinions LOL.
Give us a shout if i can lend a hand.
