Not sure if I've got this straight... Is there any exemption on emissions rules for imports of cars 20+ years old, like there is for frontal impact and LHD?

The emmissions info on ltnz.govt.nz seems to say that any imported car manufactured after 1 January 1990 must comply with the current emissions standards - i.e. Euro 3 - but no mention of exemptions for older vehicles. If there is a 20+ year exemption then this would start to kick in from January 2010 (i.e. 2010-20=1990) alowing 1990s cars to be imported.

If there's no 20 year exemption then I guess the only way something like a 968 will ever come into the country now is under the SIV rules. Is this how it is?

Frontal impact exemption is rolling 20 year
Emissions exemption is pre 1990 (not rolling).

So yeah, only way you can ever get stuff later than 1990 on the road is through SIV.

The 1990 year rule is why, despite currently being in Holland, am the happy newish owner of a RHD UK Spec 1988 944 Turbo S - just in case we ever make it back before all the oil run out!
