Hi everyone, just having a little chat to some peeps and it would appear we are well overdue for a northern PH run. We are looking at doing a run last weekend of September (Sunday 27th). We will be well into Spring so get the winter muck and dust off your P&J.

The day will probably consist of a 9am start meet and greet and general catch-up, then an early caffeine stop not long after. Some nice roads north of Auckland will be mapped out to play on and a lunch stop somewhere. smile If you have any suggestions for a destination or fun driving route please suggest!
I know it wont suit everyone, but if your keen put your name down.

  • Please note this is an informal run, which make you responsible for your own actions* wink
More details of meeting point and route to follow. Watch this space smile

John - MK1 Ariel Atom
Kylie - Sport 350
Cain - Golf GTi or ??

I would be interested, if I continue to procrastinate buying an MX5 I may have to bring a rented Corolla along though. Saying that, it may well be the quickest thing there hehe

Places to stop
Sorry to keep banging the same drum but the Pizza barn in Waipu is brilliant great food, boutique beer list, lots of space, very reasonable prices.
More up market is Sahara in Paparoa but service gets a bit overwhelmed (you're in the country kiddies)
For a quick snack if you are on hwy 1 at Kiawaka the Italian bakery there is the best between Auckland and Whangarei.
Avoid the Skyliner on the top of the Brynderwyns. Wellsford only has places that think food is fuel and to hell with the flavor but if you can't budge from McD's there's one by the Garage.
If you loop out to One Tree Point at the new marina there's a sea food/ modern food cafe. Food is very good but more Ponsonby feel and food than Northland gumboots.
Avoid the Sharing Shed on the Marsden Point hwy
If you go cross country from the North Western Hallertau at Riverhead has great beer and terrific German sausages.

Routes
The old North Road from Kumeu out to 16 just before Kaukapapa is a nice drive. Can be Cyclist infested.
Already posted re the Paparoa to Oakleigh road

Just a few ideas.

A biker friend told me that Peak Rd (off Old North Rd), is supposed to be pretty good. Not driven it myself though. One of my favourites is West Coast Rd, which links SH1 and SH16 near Wellsford.

I have an even better deal, how about The Beach House restaurant in Waipu cove. The food is way better and you'll be supporting a fellow Pistonhead since I'm a part owner biggrin Plus it's 50m from the beach.

Ooooohhh what eva George!!! wink If I remember between you and Dean Harper leading the way that day....um...Never again hahaha wink
Ill be giving each car some kind of printed written instruction, if you follow the car infront of you good luck and at your own risk!! hehe Its always hard keeping a convoy together and is bound to be split up with having a mixture of hooners and slow cruisers. So the odd stop off here and there will be good to re group.

Hi Kylie,

Just joined PH after my TVR infatuated mate introduced me.

Count me in for the cruise up North. The road between Warkworth and ST16 is a must. Good brakes is a must if you want to enjoy the full extent of the twists and turns.

Cheers
Stephen

Wooops!! Sorry sorry brain fade. Been working to hard. Sun was in my eyes. I hadn't had my cup of tea.
Yes a definite one to list, the Beach House has great food. Recommend the old school fish and chips, and the peppered squid is always perfect (The chief has to be world class to do that consistently). Even my piccy English bro in law loved the place. You have had to have met him to understand how high an accolade that is.
If you have a fine day the outside dining area is one of the best in NZ.
Cheers
