Dodgy dealing...

My 2003 Golf GTI went in for a routine service with the local VW main dealer last week, including a cambelt change. It's only done 15,000Kms (had 3500 on it when I imported it a year ago!).
A couple of days later I notice a knocking / clicking noise from the engine between idle and 1500 or so, which is louder under load. It makes the most noise with the handbrake on, engaged 1st gear and part release the clutch to put it under load without moving. The clicking is kind of like you hear on a worn CV joint at full lock.
Would a loose cambelt or tensioner make a clicking noise like that? Seems to be from the cambelt end of the engine. I don't think its heavy-metallic enough to be big end (
), and its not piston slap. I've booked it in for them to look at tomorrow and hoping they'll fess up it was a their error and fix it at no charge, but...

almost related...I have a friend with a late model HSV who lives in the Wairarapa. he had been taking it to the local Holden dealer for its regular services but he found that around $2500.00 for a simple service was a bit steep. A business colleague of his recommended another garage that he used. The service was duly done, oil & filters changed as per usual:$173.00+gst
