Northern Gateway Tunnel Run
Discussion
It seems the Northern Gateway will be opening on 25 January.
Unfortunately that's the same day as the A1GP in Taupo, but who would be keen for a Tunnel Run
sometime later once the school holiday / anniversary day traffic is over ?
According to the blurb the cameras read both the front and rear plates so there should not be a problem if, for some inexplicable reason, the front plate can't be read properly.
I presume there is no need to mention that the
will be all over it like flies . . . so no silly stuff.

I call shotgun in your car Graham (tunnel run in a spacewagon is kinda sad). I'll even volunteer to be your auxiliary reverse gear if needed!
Sold. Hope you've got your earplugs sorting as we'll be going through the tunnel in 2nd.

Will need to think of a date, time, gathered place, route, and most importantly - somewhere for lunch

I hope North Shore council got approval for this tunnel from local Iwi Graham.

It did, but seeing as the tunnel is in Rodney District (until the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance decides otherwise) what North Shore does or doesn't do is of no consequence

And my idle is above 1,500 rpm

Had a sneaky run up the first 800m or so of the southern section of the new motorway last night just past the camera gantry.
The surface is stuffed and if I was the project manager there would be some serious contract notices being issued. It's scabbing and shedding, looking like orange peel, and making a huge racket with loose chip rattling around the guards of anything driving on it.
Hopefully they're going to reseal that section but (without stopping to have a proper look) some bits looked PROPERLY stuffed.
Would not take anyone's P&J on it until it's been properly checked.

Cripes, they wernt using some Polyester systems I hope. I remember seeing the results of road resin trials a few years back when I was at Nuplex and I remember it was just too dodgy asking road workers catalyse resin at 1.5% and mix it properly. If the mixture wasnt right it wouldnt go off properly resulting in what you describe or worse.. I now know they supply epoxy systems which is in those cream coloured patches you see on the New Market over pass and roundabouts which have better results and easier to mix up by road workers. But I guess it all comes down to cost $$$$$$
With so much modern technology on offer there shouldnt be stuff ups like this

Went up on the weekend early in the morning to see what all the fuss was about. If you want to pay cash before entering you have to pull off at the BP service centre, get out of your car go into shop wait in a line of people and pay, or do as I did approx 1km before tunnel you get your pretty number plate zapped and entered straight into the system where you must pay within three days or you will get a fine. North bound tunnel is one lane which is a bit silly and can see in peak times that it will be a bottle neck. Auckland bound is two lanes much better theres a road side pay station which was flooded with cars and again people have to park get out of cars and pay. The tunnels are not that long at all and nothing to rave about about really. But the long sweeping lanes on Auckland side just asks for trouble for the straight line speed freaks
Reminds me of playing Gran turismo
