Ben where should we go your neck of the woods? Are there any other stand out pies we could try down there. I want to find that outfit that makes those venison ones.
If we come down through the Lindis - which way would you suggest?
From CHCH - Timaru - Tekapo - MT Cook - Lindis - Clyde, Crommwell, Arrowtown, Queenstown, Milford Sound. Then either go up the west coast or do that on way down and leave the central stuff last?
Going off dates how does Sat 24th Nov start in Auck and returning Sun 8th Nov. This includes Labour Day. Will be two weeks off work for the northerners.
If we leave it later it gets too close to Xmas rush again. Too early and weather is too rubbish.
Thoughts guys, also for North Island routes.
Auckland - Thames (L&P place)
- Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, Napier, Kapiti Coast
Of course to try and include as many PHers on route as possible.

If rather than Tekapo we go from Timaru (Mays Pies) to the Lindis via Waimate we can try Wallaby pies there, plus its a nice bit of road from Waimate out through the Waimate Gorge/Waihao downs comes out at Ikawai then you go up the Waitaki to Kurow, up beside the lakes to Omarama (But you do miss Mt Cook etc, so if Wallaby pies are less important then Timaru-Tekapo-Omarama) then over the Lindis to Cromwell. (alternative detour around the last bit of the Lindis for the gravel-inclined among us to drive my favourite bit of loose stuff, Phillips Rd rejoins the highway at Tarras.)
Two options off the top of my head from Cromwell...
1)Cromwell-Clyde-Alexandra-Roxburgh(home of Jimmy's pies though you can get them anywhere in Otago) then fun Ettrick-Heriot road to Gore via Moa Flat, Gore-Te Anau (isn't the most interesting road but someone may know an alternative route), Te Anau-Milford Sound to be tourists and back again, Te Anau-Queenstown-Arrowtown(Venison pies among other wonderful creations-over Crown Range to Wanaka, Haast Pass and up the West Coast.
2)Skip Alex, Roxburgh, Gore and go Arrowtown-Queenstown-Te Anau on the way down as well as the way back.
Any better ideas?

October is a pretty nasty month to be visiting. The weather will be a lottery at best, cold and wet at worst. Much much better to plan on January or at least December. In October you may as well pack a scenic book of New Zealand and admire the photos in the book while you peer into the overcast sky.
I arranged a trip a couple of years ago for some British friends. Managed to delay them to Nov. but it was pretty hit and miss for the 10 days they were here.
Need to get a hold of an updated version of this. I found it quite useful on our trip.

Help two maths geeks on tour - nice one!
Btw your coming on this trip George, if we have to put yr car back together with 100mph tape so be it
Yr not getting off the hook this time matey
There will no doubt be a race to each destination by some
but also plenty of time to relax and spend the odd day just checking the sights out and doing some time at local pubs and pie consuming of course.
Also if you dont mind its a mandatory stop over in Timavegas (Timaru) to park up at the parents for a night. They will lay on an awesome night with BBQ and plenty of space for us to crash the night. Dads joining us down there with the 34 Coupe Hotrod and may be able to wake up some of his mates rather fine pieces of kit too. GT40 to name one. There should be plenty of noise

Targa starts in Auckland on Labour weekend - the Narva Tour would be an excellent way to get to Wellington

Lottery ticket bought!
I would advise getting to Jimmy's HQ in Roxburgh before 11am to get the full selection. Maybe you should phone ahead and get a special full selection "Pieball Rally" pie warmer put on at each days bakery stop!!!
Cheers
Whitey
PS. My last visit to Jimmy's HQ was in April 07 and I was gutted as my 1pm arrival meant they were sold out of mutton pies. Had to get an extra mince and cheese to make up for it.
