Hey all!

My father and I are looking to build a designated track car, something fairly basic to learn the ropes so to speak. A friend of his recently crashed his early '90s CRX, nothing major just a bit of a fender bender. The car is going at a reasonably cheap price, as his insurance company have deemed it 'uneconomical to repair' (which seems slightly ludicrous considering how little damage has been done). I'm pretty confident it could be brough up to scratch in short order, but was wondering if a car which had been previously declared written off can be legally driven on the road once repaired? The idea being to be able to drive it to and from the track. Any information would be very much appreciated. Cheers. smile

I 'think' it might need re-certification (depending on what paperwork has been filed) but is quite possible.

An economic write-off doesn't mean it was unsafe.

So long as you can make it pass the WOF then you're fine, unless they've deregistered it as part of the write off process, then it'll have to pass compliance testing again.

What sort of CRX is it? If it's the EF shape (wedge) then it could make an alright track car... if it's an EG (the targa top version) then it's going to be soggier than a soggy sponge soaked in the urine of Soggy McSogg.

hehe Thanks Ben. It's the wedge shaped generation, and it already has a lot of work done to it which we would have had to do anyway (disc brakes all round, engine transplant, strut braces and anti-roll bars at front & rear etc.). Will probably invest in a rollcage, just to be on the safe side. There's nothing mechanically wrong with the car that I can see, and a bit of TLC should see it back on the road (fingers crossed). Thanks for the advice, will investigate the ins and outs of getting her roadworthy again.

Hi not sure of your budget but by the time you spend a grand fixing it up then another grand or so for half/full cage etc you may be looking into this kind of money http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Hond... Thats if you have your heart set on a CRX smile Atleast its ready to go and can enter some great events driving

Hey Kylie. That is a rather tidy little car for the price, particularly with authority card etc. However it does stretch a bit beyond our 'theoretical budget' (and even beyond the 'plus 50% extra theoretical budget'). hehe We've agreed a price of around $1,000 for the car, which should see it finish up at more or less the spec we were hoping for under 3 grand. If it makes sense, I think that car may be a little too good for us and our meagre abilities. wink

All going to plan I'll be in full time employment by the time next season rolls around, and then I will most likely be looking to upgrade (one way or another). Starting small, quite literally, and it does satisfy the criteria of a cheap and cheerful entry-level trackday car. smile Even as I'm typing this I just know that trademe is about to become a whole heck of a lot more familiar to me. laugh

yes we had Paul (v8Sag) come and visit as he passed thru last week and the pushy bugger made me do something I'd deliberately not done... a mental add-up of the LS Cerbera costs. yikes Still, ya gotta love a guest who brings LS6 exhaust manifold gaskets as a house gift hehe
