Does anyone know of a NZ company that does Auto transmission adapter kits? I know of guys who do manual 'boxes but they aren't very helpful with slushboxes.

Basically I need a kit to hook up a GM 4L60E (TH700R4) gearbox to a late Rover V8. I know Castlemaine Rod Shop make such a kit but I can't get a straight answer out of them regarding the gearbox or whether they'll even sell me one! It's also rather expensive at NZD$1000+ (plus shipping) for a couple of pieces of metal and some bolts.

If you don't know of a specialist does anyone know a friendly engineering/machine shop? Obviously the price for such a kit would have to be comparable to Castlemaine to make it worthwhile.

Any help would be appreciated so I can move my project on before my car rusts into the ground!

Don't get too excited just yet.

As far as I am aware the engine is still in a box. We're just trying to get all the components together so we can assemble the drive-train. If you are remotely interested this is what I'm planning at the moment :

5.1litre Rover V8 initially on twin-plenum but later on quadruple throttle-bodies(Suzuki GSXR 1000). - Already owned.
GM 4L60E from a SS holden. - Already purchased.
Hilux rear axle with LSD. - Already purchased.
Toyota Supra (early '90s) disks and calipers all round. (Not purchased yet, may use 4-pot Hilux calipers).
Either twin single master cylinders on a balance bar or twin cylinder with two remote boosters (Rover P5s only have single circuit brakes - no thanks!). Alas there is not room for a 2 circuit master with booster attached.

The engine and gearbox will be controlled via Megasquirt/Megashift - the 4L60E was the gearbox used to develop the system so should be the most bug-free.

Shocks will be either Nitron or Gaz from the UK. The car will maintain it's leaf-spring/torsion bar set-up. There will be a massive front anti-roll bar though - it makes a huge improvement on the handling apparently.

I'm planning on getting the axle and gearbox installed first with the existing engine, then the brakes will be installed and lastly the big engine. In this way if I make a mistake with the megashift and it drops down a gear at 5,000rpm it'll be a $500 engine going bang not my irreplaceable stroker.

Hopefully even with a milder cam the engine will be around the 350bhp mark with a similar number in the torque department once it's been refreshed and converted to wet-sump. If that's not enough we may see a nice Vortech blower in there but that's just pie in the sky (like the rest of it seems to be!).

I've also got major plans for the interior but it'll all be very tasteful.

So in about 10 years time it should be finished!

Hi Roger - am I missing something or are you pointing me in the direction of a manual box?

Normally I wouldn't consider an auto but a P5B Coupe would just be wrong without one. If I were going the manual route I'd go Toyota anyway as they are stronger, nicer to use and not as expensive. Nothing majorly wrong with the T5 though!
