Relocating:Job market & entry criteria for moving NZ?

Hi Folks

apologies for a non-car related thread. The Mrs & I are planning on visiting NZ in 2010 as scoping exercise to relocating on a permanent basis.

Currently work as Business Analyst in the IT/Finance arena. Two questions I hope someone could help with
1)Whats the job market like for this type of work, I've also got Service Mgmt & Banking experience
2)Would this count against me as part of the entry criteria as its not on the list of critical skills for NZ ?
Any other feedback from those who have relocated would be welcome

Hi there

If you haven't already, check back through past threads in this forum as we get quite a few immigrant Q&As here.

Where did you have in mind? You're probably going to find limited opportunities for BA skills outside the main cities - Auckland / Wellington / Christchurch. Banking is mostly Wellington head offices, with only ASB of the majors based in Auckland, and much of corporate functions are run out of Aussie. Obviously nothing like the scale or diversity of London banking here.

We engage BAs from time to time (as consultants) and to be honest we've not found there's a great shortage when we need them. NZ employers are more willing to consider people making lateral career moves than the UK so you might want to consider widening the scope of jobs you'd consider. Best bet for you to get a feel for the market would be to keep an eye on www.seek.co.nz which is the biggest jobs site.

Sorry that's probably not overwhelming positive news, the good news for you is that it is still a job-seekers market for the most part with very low unemployment (but creeping up) and anyone with reasonable skills and attitude will have little trouble getting employed, just might not be your dream job

Just rereading what I said which comes across more negative about finding a BA job than I intended. If you want to emigrate your decision should be lifestyle rather than career driven anyway, and it's fair to assume you will be able to find a BA job here, it just won't be as well paid or in as specific a sector/skill as you might expect in the UK's bigger job market. No-one will want to talk to you until you're out here, so I'd recommend you don't spend hours and hours agonising over it, just do your homework on the immigration rules as suggested and then come out for a holiday and a look see!

Hi, good luck with the 2010 hols and move! we love it here..

1) 2010 and move when? Without a real job offer it can take 12-18months for visas, so what the job market is going to be like 2011 or something is anyone's guess, things are OK at the moment generally but manufacturing is taking a hit to China and thing are teetering on dodgy economic grounds.
2)It wont count against you, you wont get the points for being on skills shortage lists but you will get points for having a degree etc.

Checkout the NZIS website points calculator, used to be 100-110 or so was enough, though they prioritize skill shortage candidates and those with solid job offers.

Also look at www.seek.co.nz for jobs.
