This has probably been done before, or at least something similar, but myself and a group of friends are planning a Kaitia - Wellington soiree.
Details are to be sorted out, input welcome, but will be based around the following :

$500 max per car (eg. $200 purchase, $300 do up)
WOF & Reg
Rego's in hat on start line - draw a car (avoids cheating on $500 limit)

Do we go
a. First to Wellington
b. Have designated checkpoints
c. Daylight driving only, event spread over a weekend

I will supply a transporter truck & trailer (room for 3or4 cars) and driver for breakdowns.

What do you think?

Anyone wishing to join us will be welcome, a meeting for all before event would probably be a good idea.
June would be good, not too cold to be waiting for the transporter when your $500 wreck has lost all its fluids on SH1.

Ideas for event and rules would be appreciated.

Would probably suit the younger types . . . but being an old, fat, bald, grumpy bascensoredard it wouldn't be my cup-of-tea.

If you went for elapsed time you could have a complusory stop-over at Taupo and a penalty of 1 minute per second on the lap time you set. driving

When people used to set $500 limits on such things that bought you a resonable car. Now many years later your really scraping the bottom of the barrel to get a legal car for that much. When is the limit going to be inflation adjusted drink

I was just about to post the same thing - $1k would open up some more interesting possibilities.

Very true, $500 was just an initial figure, I think $1000 would be better. Please note that you may not be driving the vehilce YOU buy, all regos will go in a hat on the start line so its luck of the drawer.

Myself and the friends who will be organising this are all over 40 (some fat, bald, grumpy, etc).
We were going to keep it amongst ourselves (10 cars) but I thought it might be fun to open it up to you lot who appear to like a laugh and, apart from Gravel Ben, be over 30. No offence meant to anyone here who is under 30.

Mm, laps of Taupo on the way? Dont know how the Mazda MS8 on my watchlist will cope with that.

But that's where the tactics come in. Go around in a time that keeps your car in good working order rofl and take the 5 minute penalty for being 5 seconds slower than someone who just bu99ered their car.
