I have a mate who is looking at buying a Renault Turbo. Does anyone know who in NZ would be a bit knowledgable around these? Location doesn't matter.

Also they run mechanical fuel injection similar to the early 911's. From a modifying perspective who difficult are these CIS or K-Jetronic systems for getting more power?

TIA smile

Used to live next to a bloke who had one, was an ex mechanic & used to race em & pit crew.

Always seemed to be replacing the head gaskets (a pain due to the wet liners) & had a few heads go on him too. When it went it went like a rocket tho.

If it's the one for sale on Trade me, check out his other listings. Looks like a Waikato farmer having a garage clearout... wouldn't mind seeing what he's keeping!

I had a R5GT Turbo back in 1989. They are carb'd so no engine management. There is a valve you can fit which allows wastegate to open later. Also, decent cat free exhaust system is worth while. I had a Devil system on mine.

They also had a recall in 1990 on the cooler system which runs after you turn off engine. I knew of many which caught fire (in the UK).

PS - great fun car - quick for a 1.4!!

Ah, the old french rollerskate! That brings back memories. Not as well rounded as a Pug GTI but soooo much fun. Compared to modern hot-hatches it'll feel quick but the turbo-lag will be noticeable and it'll torque-steer pretty badly too. Old school turbos are much more fun than the flat-feeling ones these days though IMHO. R5GT Turbo handled well too.

They are very fragile in the interior and body department (feel like they're made out of recycled egg-boxes) but the mechanicals are excellent if well maintained and you don't expect to be able to add 200bhp and get the same reliability. I think the same basic engine was used by volvo in their little saloons 340/360 and I seem to remember it's just a push-rod? The hot-start kit is a must as the carb used to get too hot, evaporate the fuel and not allow enough juice through to get the engine to start!

Devil exhausts were the first 'drain-pipe' systems - they were so cool then but now I just laugh at people with 5-inch tail-pipes!

Devil exhaust, K&N airfilter and waste-gate mods = 160-180bhp. Nice.

Thanks mate.

The deal is now done so I can be open about it. Just had to give my mate a chance to decide and do the deal. He is a real Group B nut and has been rebuilding an EX Lancer Turbo from the ground up the last 4-5 years. We're picking it up this weekend so I'll let you know what it's like after the weekend. Thanks for all that helped. I will try the other forum for more info.

A RHD Integrale?? I didn't think Lancia ever made any of these? Maybe it's a conversion. Or maybe I'm wrong....

Hey no worries. I wondered if anyone else had spotted it. I had seen it and emailed it to him. The rest, as they say, is history. I was just trying to respect his privacy. The Integrale has indeed been converted but I think just doesn't have that wow factor that the crazy French thing does.

His EX Lancer Turbo will be coming up for sale and is a very special little car with lots and lots of tasteful bits on it. I will post details & pics about it when I can.
