I was hoping to attend a Porsche Car Club organised driver education day at Ruapuna , however my insurers AMI have stated that the car will not be covered as soon as it goes on a track. I was at pains to state that this is not a track day , but a non competitive driver training exercise day with no time clocks etc and will be a benefit to car control etc. These events cannot be held on public roads, thus a track is the best/ safest place. However they still were immovable !

Does anyone know of any companies that cover track / driver training days as a separate entity or a company that would cover the car for road and some track days . This option however would mean having to cancel my existing policy which is only a month old !

Frustrating to say the least !!
Any help greatly appreciated
James

James. Change your insurance to these blokes... I'm changing from AMI to these guys when the Exige arrives.

http://www.classiccover.co.nz/

They do cover for non-competetive driver-training days on-track.

Contact them for details. smile

HTH smile

EDIT: Work out much cheaper than AMI for me too, despite me being with AMI since Noah was floating around in a boat with his pets on board.

They're limited mileage, but understand you can extend as an option once you've used up your mileage quota.

Oh and post pics of the trackday when it happens! smile

Just make sure you check their fine print to make sue you're absolutely clear as to what constitutes an "eligible" for cover day and a "non-eligible" for cover day. If you find out, let me know because it'll prevent me asking the same questions when I insure the 'zige in a month or two. I'm hoping that it basically means any trackday that's non-competetive including private days, and not an extremely limited number of "accredited" days.

George,
Just come off the phone from them. The cover was more expensive than I am currently paying by approx $400 to $500 dependent on 8000 Km to 10,000 km /year . Currently have unlimited mileage. I can appreciate the extra cost for track days/ driver training but here is the big IF . According to the girl I spoke to you are only covered as long as you have an instructor with you at all times !! As I said to her how can an instructor be with all the drivers during each activity ie cone slaloms , braking tests etc. How can that work ??

Cheers for that James,

That's what I feared for frown I think I get a better deal from them than through AMI anyway, but have yet to fully run it to ground. We'll see.

George . I e-mailed classic cover for a definitive explanation after my phone conversation with the girl in the office and received this reply.

Good Morning James,

Yes we certainly cover driver training days, such as those arranged by the Porsche Club. These are organized non competitive training programs overseen by suitably qualified instructors following the required safety and hazard procedures. Naturally the instructor cannot be in each individuals vehicle but is there supervising the planned exercise.

We do not cover ‘track days’ where the object is for all to get out and drive as fast as possible.

I trust this clarifies the matter for you and reassures you to the quality of insurance offered by Classic Cover.

Hope that makes it clearer for you George when you insure the Exige.
Cheers
James

That's interesting.... Theoretically, in NZ, ALL "trackdays" are actually run as "driver training" days... if it's not a timed event, it's a driver-training event as far as I'm aware.

Will have to look into it a bit more.... worst thing would be to THINK you had cover and, in fact, didn't.

George - I think you would struggle with passing an open test day or even a private track hire off as 'driver training' . The amount of documented planning and control in execution that goes into a [PCNZ] day is not inconsiderable.

James - You are unlikely to come to any grief in the exercises, the risks increase in the open track session - so listen to your instructor, don't over-drive. and keep it smooth. smile Concentrate on accuracy in line and length and you'll have a ball (the bridgestone boys will look after you). Ruapuna is a bit friendlier than Puke esp in the wet. Enjoy!

Yeah I figured as much... I guess there still ain't anyone in NZ keen to insure people for trackdays.... I guess the old adage of not crashing (or if you do, get it out of the track and push it into a ditch) holds true.

Thankfully, the only track in NZ where you run serious risk of bouncing it off the armco at silly speeds, Pukekohe, is soon to become redundant.

how do you figure it will become redundant? Just look what happened to rental costs at Taupo with the new facilities.

Yeah, and EVERY trackday I've been on, the FULL track at Taupo is the ones that pull the big crowds... the full track at Taupo over at the Honda club fills a trackday and waiting list in under 2 days, 4 months before the event!

I for one don't mind paying an extra $80+ for a trackday safe in the knowledge that most of the damage I'm likely to do will be as a result of beaching it in a sandtrap.... At Puke, going into Jennian at 185+ is always a significant leap of faith
