Importing a new (unbuilt) kit car- what customs costs?
Discussion
Does anyone have an idea of the customs duties one would have to pay on importing a new kit car, i.e. an unbuilt one, just all the build stages in a big box?
I'd do it as an export from the UK, so wouldn't have to pay the VAT here, just GST in NZ, but would they try and classify it as 'car parts' and try and add 10% on top!!??
Any one had this experience?

Also need to get a car body back from UK,can we go thirds George...
Entirely possible Paul. Just getting quotes to get a container back here now, have mentioned that it may be just the Exige and may/may not include body parts for a second car. Once I've got a more firm date of when I'll be shipping, I'll talk to you in more detail as it's well within the realms of possibility that in a 20' container, a saggy-arse body could be double-stacked with the Exige. Also need to get a car body back from UK,can we go thirds George...
Sorry G,
but it won't be for a while yet, I'm just trying to work out the costs now so I can start working on the other half ;-)
I've gota sell the blackbird first, then I'll be in a postion to get the replacement, a Murtaya, which I had a passenger ride in around Brands on the weekend, and was most impressed with it's handling, although slower in a straight line than my current beasty, it was pretty sharp around the corners, and for what I want in a car now is better suited to my 'back home' requirements, namely 4wd, no roof, and an easier route to importing & road registering in NZ, also it'll be fairly easy to detune for any Targa aspirations I might have...
On that note, what's involved in getting a NZ motorsport license?
