Do you just turn up with your tent and stove in the back of your car and fight for a spot?
Got this press release, but it doesn't give much away about camping.
Good news though if anyone is still looking for accommodation.

ACCOMMODATION STILL AVAILABLE FOR A1GP IN TAUPO
Supporters attending the three-day A1GP World Cup of Motorsport starting in Taupo on Friday-week still have an array of accommodation options in the host town.
Accommodation coordinators at Destination Lake Taupo say a number of hotel and motel rooms that were previously on hold have recently been released for sale and nearby Turangi also has plenty of motel accommodation available
Owners of holiday homes and residents looking to head away for the weekend have also opened up their houses to spectators attending the event.
Sixty houses are still available to let for the weekend and a sizeable list of bed & breakfasts still have rooms on offer. Many of the exclusive lodges in the general area also have some capacity.
A1 Team.NZL spokesman Bob McMurray says Taupo residents traditionally open up their homes to holidaymakers at this time of the year and he has urged supporters and race fans who were under the impression accommodation was sold out to inquire about bookings through Destination Lake Taupo.
"There's still ample opportunity for supporters to make a weekend of it or do a day trip," he said. "The 'full sign' isn't up in Taupo or in other potential bases like Rotorua, Tauranga and Hamilton."
And McMurray has squashed the misconception that the Taupo race is already a sell-out.
McMurray says General Admission (embankment) and most Corporate Hospitality packages have been sold, creating an impression that very few tickets are left.
"We still have plenty of room left in the grandstands we've shipped in especially for this event," McMurray said. "Spectators will have incredible panoramic views of the entire track and should feel a real part of the action and entertainment."
McMurray says spectators will be heading to the track, just a short drive out of the Taupo CBD, in a diverse range of transport.
"Forty helicopters have booked landing and parking space at the venue, which doesn't include choppers running shuttle services from Rotorua, Taupo and Napier airports," McMurray said.
"We also know of one corporate group that is staying at an upmarket lodge in Rotorua and will be whisking guests to Taupo via sea plane – a lake to lake service!"
Taupo Motorsport Park can hold 33,000 spectators, with 25,000 grandstand seats complemented by 3,000 General Admission 'embankment' tickets and 5,000 VIP guests.
Accommodation can be sourced via email at a1gp@laketauponz.com.
Tickets are on sale via www.ticketek.co.nz and www.a1gp.com.

I just don't see how there will be camping though George if there isn't any. All of those areas we went through at the track day are earmarked for parking..... We're not going to bother - just gonna be the long drive there and back everyday for the three days. Laughable organisation - if I was a national press journalist I'd be all over the story - biggest motor race ever in NZ and they aren't allowing camping. S**t, if that wasn't so bad it would be funny!!!
Can you imagine them telling folk at Le Mans or one of the GPs they couldn't camp? Or Bathhurst?
Genuinely PMSL - some bed wetting resource consent civil servant has managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.......I suspect this could be a pretty big story.

It wont stop people camping even though its marked for parking. I bet theres a few sneaky tents put up between cars for later on. Not to mention on neighbouring property too. Id pack a tent just in case
With the Elise they give you a pup tent as standard.... it's called the roof... comes with poles and everything!
Hmm
Here we are organizing a new race event. Promoted as a class act and we have to submit an application to allow camping on the track with the chance (note I said chance) of drunkeness, broken glass, fights, boorish behaviour, vandelism, theft, some idiot climbing the outside of the camera tower at 3 in the moring, the great unwashed that will camp under a Red Shed tarp and get pnemonia when it rains and we have to provide security, showers and toilets and do it round the clock...........Or we could forget to apply (the first post mentioned this?).
Seems there would be a temptation, stongly resisted for sure, just a temptation to put camping in the too hard basket. Yes Yes we know how well behaved the enthusiasts would be and it's only a few bad apples etc etc etc.
Just an alternative view
Cheers

Have a nice time down there at the A1GP guys, I hope to see some pics posted up next week along with stories. Were doing our usual pilgrimage to Kumeu car show tom. Will be taking my version of Black Beauty
Have fun out at Kumeu Kylie
I need to blow the cobwebs out of the Westie ready for the trackday on Monday so I'll keep well clear of the patrols around the Kumeu area
