And it looks like John Key will replace him clap.

What’s even more interesting is the media speculation as to possible ulterior motives to provoke his resignation. Not for the first time the media is hyping up the possibility of some dirt being dug up (though so far, miraculously, the National party has managed to stay very clean despite numerous previous threats rolleyes).

What will be GREAT is if there's bugger all "dirt" in this book.... Don Brash is a good guy, and a passable leader and I admire him having the courage to step down because this constant attacking of his character was doing the party no good (even if it was groundless)..... you can be sure that John Key won't take the same crap lying down without throwing it back 10-times.

The real contrast between National and Labour is that Nats politicians have the honour and courage to step down when they know they're not doing the party any good... Labour MPs simply entrench themselves further.

I'd much prefer Brash to Clark. ol' horsey helen's main skill is getting away with blatantly lying to everyone.

And how... the teflon queen of spin as it were.

Will be good when Key gets in though.... as nice as Brash was, he was just too nice/weak to stand up to her in a debate..... John Key will be more in a position to bitchslap her upside the head.

It doesn't surprise me to read he's been considering it for nearly a couple of months. I think he has put National in a strong position, has won back alot of traditional National support and convinced a few swing voters that there is value to be had in voting National. They have plenty of time until the next election to get a good front bench together, get some clear messages to the community and show Aunty Helen and Uncle Michael the back door.

I don't think Hager has shite on anyone to be honest.

Nothing we didn't already know and dismiss anyway... if there was serious stuff you can bet they'd not have relinquished the gagging order so readily.

National have a strong front-bench.... Labour have ageing hippies.... Labour's only strength is Helen and her spindoctors..... I have a suspicion that Key will be a bit more offensive than Brash.

What National NEED to do now is to not waate effort on a leadership vote, they should all get in behind the guy the NATIONAL VOTERS want there (Key) and get in behind him 100%.

Labour are busy spinning this as more National disruption and already badmouthing Key as they know he's a real threat... I have a feeling over the next few days/weeks you'll see a LOT of "dirt" on Key, because Labour wants to see a Brownlee or English-led national as they know the public will receive them less-well and it'll practically gaurantee them a 4th term...... come in Helen, your time is UP!

the more they feel threatened, the more dirt they will try to dish up. how the dirt is answered is a measure of the politician's 'metal'. good luck to the new guy - imo socialist govs per se are bad news.

Be rude not to hehe We were discussing the other night that you'd think she would get rid of that huge mole on her face with all that money.

Interesting post - tell you what though, being an a-political emigrant from the Motherland, I am far happier living in a country that spends taxpayers money on making uneccessary sports stadiums and towers rather than one that spends taxpayers money on waging uneccessary war!

Well lets review Hager’s other efforts…publications like “Seeds of distrust” which basically alleges that the government planned to release genetically modified corn in order to win an election, then he alleged that SIS was spying on Maori in the Star Times (the paper later printed a retraction and apology because they lacked on critical component of any new story…any degree of truth), then “Secrets and lies: The anatomy of the anti-environmental PR campaign”, later he published stuff about how New Zealand was involved in an international spy network…etc. Brash wants to clear the way for Hager to publish the book now any way.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that, after all NZ now has troups in Tonga propping up what is effectivly a dictatorship,

I would say its nothing more than a peace mission as NZ troops have done for other war torn coutry's. I dont beleive NZ has anything to with their issues, were just there to help get some stability and ensure civilians are safe. I am not sure that keeping the airports open is dictating in that sense is it? But I guess there is a fine line of interferring.

"Hard decisions require hard men..."

Couldn't agree more. I don't think Blair fits that bill. At all.

I did write a long response, but I'm not going to bang on about all the things that have changed in the UK in the past 25 years. Just enjoy the country while you can and be VERY happy you can get on a plane and come back to what is undoutadely a better place.

Overall I don't think Blair has done a bad job. He inherited a lot of crap from previous Conservative and Labour governments (decades of political correctness biting us where it hurts - 'come on in all of you, we'll give you anything you want if you'll vote for me!').

What else do you do with the Americans? Would it have been better for Britain (and her close allies) to stick two fingers up to the USA? I suspect we'd all be in far worse shape if we did.

The grass is always greener by the way. I still can't get used to Xmas in the sun and I can think of nothing I'd enjoy more than a walk, all wrapped-up in my coat and gloves in the freezing cold down to my local to enjoy several pints of Timothy Taylors in front of a roaring open fire. It's also a lot more comfortable wearing a Santas outfit in the UK!

Let's hope the New Year brings better times for both countries!

He's done a stinkingly awfull job. handed a decent ecconomy , Brown has kept that ship afloat well, not Blair, Blair has turned the UK in to a police state, elad us into an unjust war comparable to vietnam, made us the target for terrorism, turned UK into a crime ridden filth hole full off illigal imigrants/assylum seekers and chavs. Wasted billions on health, screwed over education.

Almost all his major legislation has been about controlling and denying, nothing positive at all.

...you'll not see the long, romance novel inspiring sunsets you get here...

Like these?

All three taken from the side of SH1 between Timaru and Oamaru

Or these?

Which were taken from somewhere slightly less accessible than the others admittedly, about 2km east and 1km up from the Haast pass (Brewster Biv for those that know it).

I don't really have anything useful to contribute to the NZ vs UK discussion having never actually been out of NZ, but even though our politicians well, suck really, I can put up with it because I like so much else about the country.

A couple of sunset pics from a few weeks ago at home...

theres good and bad things about NZ and the UK. Neither is perfect. But I like how in NZ politics doesnt realy seem to matter all that much, in the UK you get egotistical morons with mad ideas that realy do affect the country.

I've only been here a year but for me its a far nicer place to live.

NIIICCCCEEEE!!! I can feel a painting coming on

Arrh the world is full of whining whingers. I am not getting hung up on the small stuff. As above look outside, no pollution (stuff all - a little fart gas perhaps ), plenty of space to set up a nice pad for bugger all money - compared to the UK anyway. Our neighbours are constantly taking pics of their kiddies in the swimming pool and sending them "home to the UK", their familes back there are green with envy with our lifestyle. You just have to weigh it up and see what works for you. If you dont like it here and cant fit in - go back to where you came from and be happy , no brainer really rolleyes
