The government is proposing restricting the age of second hand vehicles imported into the country to help cut vehicle emissions.

www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3829555a10,00.html

No mention in this article about exemptions for importing interesting stuff, so assuming that's how it's implemented there'll even less options for exotica you can bring into the country. Some petrolheaded lobbying required for this one I think.... on the other side will be all the car importers rubbing their grubby mits together in glee at the idea of a government-sponsored scheme to get the NZ vehicle fleet turning over quicker.

Arrrgh - this means I wouldn't have been able to import my Caterham.

It will also mean a stop on the import of things like interesting historic compertiton vehicles as well as classics. Not great.
I suppose the other way of getting joe public to buy more efficient vehicles would be to tax fuel more.. more dosh for the government and the end of the most entertaining V8/turbo culture. Surely irresistable to the bean counters and those in power?

I think we are screwed whatever option they take... Get out there and enjoy the toys now!

Yeah,... as far as I can tell, it's just going to be a hard cut on the age of vehicles (like for example, nothing older than 6 years)

I'm picking that this will be across the board, no matter how "interesting" the car is.

I wonder if "classics" will be exempt as they are with the frontal impact laws? I mean even the most environmentally unfriendly 1950s American Gas Guzzler pollutes less than a daily-driven Prius if it's only brought out of the garage once a year for the beach-hop.

I sincerely hope they don't bring this in. If they do though, it looks like my Elise may be going up for sale as I'll need to hurry through my plans to get an S1 Exige into the country before the legislation comes in.

Hopefully this will go to Select Committee. It shouldn't be too hard to draft a suitable exemption for interesting vehicles.

The trick would be picking the winner of the next election, to make an early run on an amendment if it doesn't work out this term.

Given the LTSA's track record of putting plans into action it'll probably end up that only 6-year-olds can import cars......

It's all about the environment teacher we need greener cars . . .

. . . British Racing Green to be specific

Why don't they just set a standard for emissions.. rather than saying cars have to be of a specific number of years old? The regs here are very proscriptive and often miss the point that they are trying to make.

Exceptions for interesting cars go without saying.. British racing green ones in particular :-)

Was talking to the Manager at Giltraps Toyota Grey Lynn last Friday night about this, hes obviously rubbing hands but the 10's of thousands of people who will be affected by this directly and indirectly will be huge. Aucklands alternative transport system will not support these people who cant afford to buy new cars. Everyone knows how crap the transport is here. Personally if I had to catch buses to get to work it would take me hours to get there by the time I hooked up to them all. Push bike would be quicker!

Mmmm that 1999 Sport 350 may have to come sooner....I wish

Mate...will you wrench it too as required? I still want to be the first to have one in NZ, been saying that for a while now . I know there are a few V8's spec'd up to the 350's with suspension, chips and the wheels, but they arent the real thing. Black Beauty would have to go, which I am reluctant to sell her at the moment. Like to keep both if the bank said yes. Its a V8 in a years time or a boat tied up down at the local. banghead

Boats are for chartering, not owning.

It's too much money to have "tied up" in something that is used so infrequently.

Yeah given that the 350 sport has lighter bodywork as well, unless it's a genuine 350, it's never gonna be the same.

I'd love a twin chargecooled 350.... or should I say 550.... would have to add a quaife box though to handle the power... but then you'd have (IMHO) the PERFECT supercar.

I'm the same with the S1 Exige... I want the first (and only) one in NZ.

I guess you wouldn't be interested in this then?

www.pistonheads.com/sales/64162.ht

www.lotusespritgt1.com/replica.htm

Or this if that's too radical for you

www.pistonheads.com/sales/102065.h

They both seem rather cheap for what they are.

Yes seen them. Been keeping my eyes open for upcoming sales through Esprit Forums also on Lotus Esprit World. All so very tempting. Not too radical at all

I'm talking about REAL Exiges (S1s)... the S1 Exige was a road-legal version of their Motorsport Elise Racecar... the S2 Exige like James's is a 111R Elise with a roof

As for an Elise GT1... I'd give up my manhood for one.
