There’s two mint looking Black Porsche 928 – S4’s round the corner from work. Think they are 1991’s. The owner has put sports exhausts and after market shiny split rims on them. God they are good looking cars. Sometimes we follow each others path to work. The sound of those 5L engines is lovely. I just had a look on trade me to see what’s about. There are a lot of autos for sale, is it rare to find them in manual? What are they like to drive?, I bet they go like cut cats

I had a 1990 S4 (Auto) for about 4 years, they really are a speed defiying machine made for the autobahn, once your up and running over 100ks they come into their own.For a car weighing over 1700 kilos they handle pretty well.
Mechanically bullet proof, besides the torque tube being prone to bearing failure, great anchors, electrics occasionally can play up.
Very seldom manual unless you find the odd GTS,I wouldn't touch one without service history as your still servicing a 250k car.
If I bought another for a keeper,id buy a spare LHD that occasionally pop up for spares.
Have you seen the 97 GTS on trademe,id be really tempted if I wasn't trying to ween my self off toys..cry

Manual 928s are hen's teeth (or almost)

I'm not much of a one for bubble cars and I HATE the look of the early ones, but the later ones, with the right wheels etc just look sex! Goes to show there was never anything wrong with the basic shape, and any 928 with the right stance (suspension) and shoes can look awesome.... (unless maybe they're in that 1970s brown/gold colour.... chesthairtastic!

Does it have a blue bottle hiding in the back under a piece of carpet?

Agreed with shape and colour. But these black cars with split shiny rims, I was like a maggie to them when I first seen saw them zooming around lick Wider feet on it certainly tarts them up too. Nice stance from behind angles. I would imagine the manuals would fetch slightly hight prices then?

One of the PCNZ boys managed to slip his 928 with 150hp nitrous shot through scrutineering for a driver training day - no probs pacing a GT3 cup car down the back straight

changing gear with the window winder would be just as effective as with the gear lever on that french box, wouldn't it?

Colour does make a big difference with the 928. There's an older white 928S I see most days on the way to work (with skinny wheels) and it doesn't look that great. The later ones are fabulous though, loads of car for the money.

my bad - the nitrous 924 is dark grey and it only made 268kW at the rollers on the dyno yesterday - as a benchmark Ray Williams GT2 managed a 511kW

I've driven S4s with manual and auto boxes and the manual is a seriously heavy, ponderous affair. I seem to remember a very heavy clutch too. The auto is definitely the way to go.

They are lovely machines and one of the few porkers I'd ever own. They are even practical as I sat in the back of one and ok I am a short-arse but it had plenty of room and was comfortable. Ideal for the family as there is even space for the dog! A silver GTS with black leather - YUM!

S2s and S3s can be had for seriously little money and the major mechanicals are pretty much bullet-proof. Still, if it did go bang, you could always modify it and slip an LS1 engine in with a conventional 6-speed. I wouldn't normally advocate such behaviour but if it keeps more of these cars on the road......

If you got a good one you wouldn't lose any money on it over a decent time period - late S4s, in particular GTSs are actually going up in value in Europe. The only problem I could see in purchasing one is if a mint late eighties M6 came up at the same time!
