Very sad. The bits of news coming through seem to be getting less morbid, so that's good. Fingers and everything else crossed.
In thinking about Hammond, the "I am a driving God !!!" bit makes me chuckle every time.

Awful accident. Fingers crossed for him. Thinking back to some other serious head injuries - which I assume is what he has?? - Karl Wendlinger, Mika Hakkinen and Roberto Guerrero all made full recoveries having been put into comas at the time of their accidents to help reduce pressure on swollen or bleeding brains. As the swelling reduced, so the coma inducing drugs were reduced and they gradually came back. I think it is similar to Christiano de Matta - who is also now expected to make a full recovery.
So *if* it is head injuries, he is in a great hospital for head trauma (one of the best in the UK) and modern techniques appear to be really good for this kind of injury. I am optimistic for the little fella, assuming there are no other injuries. He appears to have regained consciousness at some points as they were cutting him out - and that must be a good sign.
Hats off to him, balls of steel for trying that, TV entertainment or not.

He's described by BBC reports as having "a significant brain injury" and Doctor's are confident he'll make a recovery, but not specific as to how complete that will be. Hope he's OK - don't know that I'd have the balls to strap myself into that thing with 0-270 odd MPH coming up in 6 seconds.
I guess they will never commit to saying he'll make a full recovery - especially with a head injury. A bad concussion can be a 'serious head injury'. What is a 'significant' brain injury??? They said there is no internal bleeding, so my guess is it must be bruising/swelling??
They'll be waiting for a few days to see what happens with that bruising and swelling before they stick their necks out and say something positive. And then, they'll probably only tell the family.
I had a pretty bad head injury two years ago - swelling on the brain, cranial pressure, loss of speech for two weeks and memory for three days - and this was exactly how they played it with my missus. They're always pessimistic - then everything else is a bonus!! I was dribbling and stopping every few words - but all was well 'upstairs'. Six weeks later I was out on a track day. The brain is an amazing thing :-)
