Well I went down for the day on saturday and had a great time - southland gravel roads are most enjoyable, plenty of loose stuff and wide enough to provide many opportunities to practise ye olde scandinavian flick. Was the nicest driving I've done in quite some time, the roads down there are a bit more open than most around Dunedin, better sight lines meaning you can spend a much greater proportion of your time sideways

He's just happy to be there , hes not exactly competitive but has a lot of fun - its an XR8 by the way and sounds rather tasty now that its got a manual 'box in it. first time I saw it (Catlins coast rally last year) it was automatic
Thanks for all the positive comments I was pretty happy with some of those shots. (and had a lot of fun getting there/taking them etc...)
That Hilux in the paddock was a bit slow (in fact, I dont think I even saw it move!) but it was such a typical NZ view that I had to take a pic of it.
The more rallies I go to the more keen I am to get involved and start doing a bit myself, but I think it'll have to wait at least until I finish Uni (and do something about the student loan), its a very expensive hobby. The older (RWD) cars are definitely the way to go though, they just seem to be having so much more fun than the more modern stuff. I do like the idea of a mk1 MR2, perhaps the closest you could get to rallying the likes of the legendary Lancia Stratos without spending fairly large sums on a replica (or ludicrous amounts on a real one).

Careful with a mid engined car... low polar moment of inertia - so when they let go they tend to swap ends reeeeeaaaal quick!
I did a bit of rallying years ago in a Mk2 escort. Great fun. All was in control so long as "forwards" wasn't visble through the back window!

Yep, I had a Red Manual 1985 Mk1 MR2 for quite a few years with three peice wheels and aftermarket exhaust being the only mods to it. Was really really fun to drive. In its day was one of the smartest things around and my mate and I used to think we were just the business in it LOL.
I remember doing quite a few trips on the back roads round Timaru where there was gravel and remember the car was twitchy as hell and stepped out all over the show, so would be a great car if thats what you like. The dam thing would corner like it were on rails. The interior felt like I was in an Esprit, I think that's why I bought it in the first place.
