My new toy arrives next week...

And it's a Saker SVS
I've spent the last 6 months trying to sell my 911 Turbo, it finally goes and the exchange rates turned to crap. I'd been watching the rates since November last year and now my car has sold they've made the whole exercise just too expensive for me. At least for a car less practicle than the 911. So I was waiting for the rates to see if they would drop and meanwhile a Saker chassis came up unfinished at a good price. I did some numbers and a Pro's and Con's list and decided to buy the Saker. My first encounter with the Saker was about 8 years ago when I sold some race wheels to Bruce Turnbull. I delivered them to him and had a look through the workshop. I liked the concept but they lacked attention to detail and "finish". To me they looked like a homebuilt. Mainly the headlights and indicators, interior. Little stuff like that. After considering the chassis I searched the web and found this example www.sakercars.com.au/assets/aus_gallery/New%20Lights%20July05%20007.jpg . It looks miles better and Bruce designed all the lights etc so they available here. The chassis is being delivered to Bruce next week where he will begin completing it. I considered many engine options and am proberly going to fit a V7 WRX Sti engine and 5 speed box. We went through many engine options but for various reasons the WRX engine is the best choice for me. The chassis's are constructed for the Subby motors. I will be finishing the interior myself and probably install the LinkPlus and a few other items I want to take care of.
I am dissapointed I'm not getting the XTR2 but the Saker should keep me happy on the track. Standard they do 1:12's at Manfield (GT3 Porsches are around 1:09's - 1:10's). It also has a roof to keep me dry and has a proper car reverse. It doesn't have a sequential box (but it is an option later) or 10,500rpm redline tho. On the looks department I'm divided. I think they both have there merits.
So Graham...your still unique

My two preferred engine options were the RB26dett and a 911 Turbo motor.
I've seen the NSX engine and others as well. There are allot of things that factor into the engine choice. Weight, chassis balance, crankshaft position, gearbox, chassis modifications, engine modification costs, parts availability etc. The "4 banger" will get it going and I could twin turbo a flat six and drop that in with very little mods. After owning Porsches for the last 5 years my wallet would rather be modding a Subaru motor than a 911 Turbo. If I use a RB26 or VQ35 or similar I would need to source either a Renualt or G50 gearbox $$$. LSD's and parts for them are $$$. Bruce converts the Subaru box's and is very happy with them. They are running 50 Sakers in Holland in a race series with much success. I have put allot of thought into it and the WRX engine short term is the sensible choice.

You could always upgrade to one of those Radical twin 'busa block V8's that run in the SR8's Mmmm... that V8 M5 motor a while back would be nice. Or this M3 setup www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Specialist-cars/Wrecked-cars/auction-59769652.htm Anyone want the body
A TT flat 6 would be very nice, just like the Dauer 962 had...
I agree with keep the costs down, which is just one of the reasons I'm getting rid of the Ult, I'll probably just end up with a decent go kart, and spend the spare change on a nice Yacht to take the family out fishing on!
Out of curiosity is there any scope (or chassis space) for running the engine in the same layout as a Porsche? Then you could perhaps make it into a 4wd...

Tears are forming in my eyes from looking at those pictures. It should really carry a warning...

I fully agree. The $$$ value is irrelative it more about the fun value.
I want a quick competant track car that's road legal and won't break the bank. I've been told the STi engine should be good for 400hp with some tickling. The gearbox can be used as a transaxle. The engine is light and has a low centre of gravity. If I blew it up they're available and reasonably priced. While I'm using the car I can be building up a flat6 TT and the car won't be off the road for long. The chassis are now set up for the Subaru motor from the factory so any other engine will fit but means modding the chassis and upsetting the balance that Bruce has designed for the car. I don't think the STi engine is a particuly attractive engine whereas a RB26 or M3 motor would look

Very cool am very jealous. Be great to see some pics once its finished
UPDATE
After much research I have purchased a 2004 Version 8 STi WRX engine. Complete with Twin Scroll Turbo, extractors and all ancillery items. The chassis is now at Turnbull Engineering and the body is being ordered on Monday. You have to decide on the color of the body before they can start as the resin is ordered in the color you choose. When the body comes out of the mould it's finished and doesn't require painting. I was going to have it painted Lambo Orange but metallics are difficult given the resin process and they prefer not to do them so I have decide to have it painted Gulf Blue. When it's finished it will resemble the Gulf racing cars...livery and all.
