Actually a general “some things about Kiwiland” thread.

Has any one learned what the various types of fish are here? I’m always overwhelmed when I go into the local chip shop and end up ordering whatever animal comes under the heading “battered fish” (shark, endangered whale, possum?). Clearly some important information they failed to provide me with in the “settlement pack”! (I am now up to speed on the treaty of Waitangi though…that should be useful)

So many houses here look like they where last decorated over 10 years ago, is this some kind of resource consent issue or was that the last time wallpaper and carpets went on sale?

Why is it furniture/white wear stores always have a “sale”? Willington bidpost has been promising me the bist bids and the bist bid dils for months.

“Farmers” actually has nothing to do with farming really, “Farmlands” on the other hand is a fantastic shop selling everything the modern horticulturalist could want.

Why do the government hate Auckland so much? They approve millions in funding for the “Wellington inner city bypass” and “Transmission gully” yet tell Aucklanders there is no money for the eastern corridor plan, congestion charging is coming and to take the bus?

Everything exciting happens in Auckland, people go on killing sprees, dogs attack children, stores get robbed, houses are washed away in torrents of raging water, yet we must be content just to read about it in the paper. Where is are share of the sensationalism?

“The cake tin”, It doesn’t really look like a cake tin at all really? “Galvanised steel building surrounded by concrete multi story car park” would be much more appropriate. Similarly the beehive!

Pies – The rest of the world lags behind! Pies made by Asian people in corner bakeries are an integral part of local economies. Blessed be the pie…

Current affairs programs, like watching (and usually swiftly proceeding) the news but with irrelevant commentary by some one paid gross sums of money.

The warehouse (where everything you buy is broken) announces it’s going upmarket, they now sell terracotta pots. Pack ‘n’ Slave don’t actually pack for you?!!

Nothing else I can think of for now, feel free to add.

***So true and why I always ask what's on the menu Cause of variety of fish here, you can also be fussy what you want fried. Unless its a small dodgy Asian chip shop in the middle of nowhere. More often these days in the upmarket shops you will be asked if you want it crumbed or battered, wedges or fries, salad or fried onion rings. Its getting there.

***Depends on the neighbourhood really and if its state owned. State houses are just the pits, you hardly ever see anyone of this type taking pride in their home. Why should they I guess. I think its fair to say that most working class middle income earners who have their own home have a go at some sort of DIY adventure.

“Farmers” actually has nothing to do with farming really, “Farmlands” on the other hand is a fantastic shop selling everything the modern horticulturalist could want.

***So true today, the original founder did sell British farming goods back in their hey-day and diverted in to making drapes and furniture. I remember as a ankle biter walking through the old Farmers Trading Co and seeing saddlery and farmers clothing. Times have changed.

Why do the government hate Auckland so much? They approve millions in funding for the “Wellington inner city bypass” and “Transmission gully” yet tell Aucklanders there is no money for the eastern corridor plan, congestion charging is coming and to take the bus?

***The rumour has it that numerous rich lawyers that live in the Eastern suburbs got together and opposed the idea. Of course they had no problem taking the council through the courts.

Pies – The rest of the world lags behind! Pies made by Asian people in corner bakeries are an integral part of local economies. Blessed be the pie…

***The good old Mays pie in the south island is a popular hit, dunno who they are made by today.

The warehouse (where everything you buy is broken) announces it’s going upmarket, they now sell terracotta pots. Pack ‘n’ Slave don’t actually pack for you?!!

***It is getting better with its range, but your right there's still a lot of crap to sift through before there's a bargain to be found.

***Nothing to add sorry

Well I’ve been invited to one…I’m having second thoughts now I know what it is though! It reminds me of being a schoolboy in the west of Ireland when they took us out to adventure centres and told us “this is how the Celts cooked”. Do I dare to go the distance?

Edit: Though with sufficient quantity of beer surly the alcohol would kill any germs and probably render my sense of taste enough…

That goes both ways... I nearly retched when I smelt the English version... and I thought French cheese was bad...

You can probably find the UK Marmite somewhere in NZ if you look hard enough, if not, well there's a business op for you... we can get Vegemite over here in the Supermarket!

You want to taste it buddy it's really good. Done properly it's as hygenic as any other form of cooking . . . and much safer than a kebab
