Another one heading your way. My house is going through the lengthy (6 - 8 weeks) conveyancing procedure so once thats done its time to come across. My Kiwi girlfriend is returning to Palmerston North with me in tow, just need to ship my stuff there.
Thanks already to Dan and Iain for their advice.
Does anyone know if a 20' container is a fixed price whatever is in it, or pack everything into a shared container at lower costs. I'm still waiting for removals firms with their quotes but your personal experiences will help. Like what would you do differently given a second go. And would you have sold everything in UK or is that false ecomony to buy again. And whats a waste of time bringing? UK telephones, I've got BT cordless digital, would they work? Still undecided about my car...
Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations.

Hi Mark,

I moved back from the UK last year with a 20' container of Cerbera and other stuff.

IIRC the shipping cost was around £1500 - this included container rental, having it brought to my house in Oxfordshire on a lorry and 3 hours of driver time while everything was loaded up. This was a bare bones service - I did all packing, documentation of contents, loading and customs clearances myself and had no problems.

PM me if you want my shipping agent details and I'll dig them out - very helpful guy, based in Devon.

Don

Palmerston North? Hmmmm.... well at least it's close to Manfeild race track!

...and if you do a container the way I did it's fixed price. The removal company quotes I got were at least double what it cost me to do it this way.

I probably got rid of too much stuff that I could have brought back and saved having to buy again - car cleaning stuff, kitchen things etc... if you've got a container you might as well fill it. Electrical appliances just need a plug swap and pretty sure your phone will be OK - same "BT plug" in use here, though technically it should be NZ permitted I'd be surprised if you have any problem.

What car - the 350i? You're OK if it's 20+ years old, if it's less than that you won't be able to register it here for road use (see other threads on this).

We paid £3k for a full 20' container packed and unpacked end to end us not lifting a finger.

As said if you do all the work yourself I think costs are 1500-2000 quid. Insurance is usualy higher if you self pack (and if you have a plasma TV they'll hate you good).

What firm did you use Rob? And would they include a car as the contents?

We used Crown relocation, a car in a 20' container doesnt leave much space and theres additional costs for importing a motor I think (I havnt). We filled a 20' with the contents of a smallish nwe 3 bed detached.

If your going the end-toend do nothing route have a word with PSS, John Masons or Crown. Pickfords are pants and IMO try and avoid anyone who ises New Zealand Van Lines at the other end..

if a 20' is to big you can go for a reffer which is a little smaller and cheaper. A 40' is about 1-1.5k more cash I think.

Your phone will work but probably not any of the features relying on Caller Id - NZ uses a different system!

Fill any spare gaps with Walkers crisps, Skips, Walnut Whips, Heinz tomato soup and anything from Marks & Sparks - people are always buying these things on TradeMe! (I don't as I have my own personal shipper - my Mum!)

Bring any heavy likely-to-need-or-want car spares with you.

If you have spare room at the end, post on here again and see if anyone needs anything shipping.
