Just came across the Harbour Bridge and those square light thingies that do the crosses and arrows were showing '50'.

I've obviously seen this before but for the first time I wondered . . . Is this a mandatory speed limit or an advisory?

If it's a mandatory speed limit there must have been some change in the traffic regulations that I missed?

They must have sneaked it in with the Boy-Racer Act

I've always looked upon them as advisory limits.

For starters, the ONLY way you can be notified of a new speed limit is on the official type sign (black number on white background inside a red circle). When a temporary speed zone is in place (such as in road works) the temporary speed limit must be reinforced every 250m by another temporary speed limit sign.

Having said that, I think some schools have lit-up signs outside denoting a 40km/h speed limit.... having said that, my bet is that if you got pinged for 40km/h+, then you'd be pretty easily able to defend it in court.
