NZ tax question

Posted this on the Business forum but maybe you guys may know this one.

I have all the receipts from my travels in NZ. Something tells me that as I'm not a NZ resident I shouldn't have to pay NZ taxes - so can I claim the GST back and if so how, please?

Sorry it dont work that way
You only dont have to pay GST if its not consumed in NZ...eg you buy something in a shop and they post it to a UK address for you to be waiting for you when you get there

GST is a tax on consumption, just because you dont permanently live here dont mean you consumed the item any less

Thanks dejoux. Much of it was accommodation, food and trips. Damn.

What about gifts bought and carried out personally, ie tangible things I still have? Posting stuff home is not much use as the postage would probably be more than the tax!

My understanding is that unless you declared it 'Duty Free' at the time of purchase and had it delivered to outbound customs at the airport . . . you're stuffed.

Ah well, at least it went to NZ (probably the Dept of Conservation as they seem to own most things) and not bloody Gordon Brown (UK Chancellor)

Sorry to disappoint, but your taxes have been given to a family of Somalis or Samoans living in a free state-house in South Auckland to buy a packet of ciggies to share with their children.

Sorry to disappoint, but I think I can give you a run for your money!.... mind you, you're still the undisputed champion of brake-bias adjustments and melted tail lights
