I love these movies that are so real and make you think twice about where one should live!!!I am heading down stairs to dig out a shelter and fill it with supplies..!! Any Geologists amoungst you lot? When have they predicted the 30 or so volcanoes that Aucklands sitting on to blow!!?? Sorry such a random thread.

Auckland's volcanoes are the types that only go once (twice tops). Following the sequence the next one should be somewhere in the West Harbour area !!!
HA yeah right. Actually looking at the construction of our house and surrounding ones, it wouldn't stand a shit show. Even if a few cm of ash landed on it, would probably cave in!! But never say never. Actually Graham you would have to be close on the north shore facing that Rangitoto if it went up again..?
Well I know a little thanks to hours of geology/geotechnical lectures, more through osmosis than study.
I think the Volcanoes in Auckland are Basaltic which means they don’t “explode”, just ooze searing lava destroying everything in it’s path (A comforting thought isn’t it?), rather like when you see pictures of Hawaii with lava flows creeping over peoples back lawns.
Taupo was Rhyolitic and hence went “bang” in a big way (hence it’s a “super volcano” and if/when it explodes again will probably offer a far more spectacular display of ejecting sheets of pumice covering a substantial portion of the north island. It may also plunge the world into a short ice age, this would be significantly more worrying for me than seeing Rotorua flattened and buried.

Having analyzed a lot of remains coming out trenches in Rotorua it was incredible how the experienced foremen could find the various ash layers. The two most obvious ones were the Tarawera eruption and the much thicker / deeper layer from the Taupo eruption.
It's really quite cool as long as you don't worry about another eruption everytime there's an earthquake at night . . . one of the few things that can wake me up.
