Just been exchanging emails with a guy in Christchurch selling a road-going Tuscan V8. It's been certified as a low volume vehicle due to the fact it's a race car and must be entered into two motorsport events a year in order to get it's WOF. He's asking $65,000 for it and it's got a 4.6 Rover V8 installed at present. Check it out on TradeMe.

Nah, the Ultima is on a different planet in terms of quality. Even Carl Hansen's Tuscan looks like a knackered old Camel compared to a well-built Ultima GTR.

It is nice though and with the right engine (say a 5.0litre V8? ) would be a bit of a monster. You wouldn't get anything much cheaper that would be that quick around a circuit like Pukekohe.

My car dreams are in tatters at the moment anyway. I've just gone permie after 7.5years of contracting, I've got a huge mortgage, a barn to build, and an extension to sort and that's without the septic tank problems etc etc.

The TVR will be going in the next few months to make way for......nothing! Unless a reasonably priced Skoda Fabia vRS turns up (I kid you not!). I'll just have to make do with the Scoobie.

You'd need to throw a few more bucks than a 5ltr engine to make that quick into todays racing standards.
Id think that will be lucky to have 200hp at the wheels with that tractor engine,so you could add atleast another 30k to make it competitive.
Jamie,Hansens car would blow away 99% of the Ultima's plus it looks 100% nicer.
I'm glad with the motorsport loophole, that TVR's atleast in a comprimised way, can be road registed,it just makes a total fecken mockery of our current leglislation.

Awww..... well Jamie since you've been scarce lately, you should definitely show up to the next PH meet.... even in the scoob if you have to.... around those twisty roads they're well able to keep pace with an Elise or two... keep yourself immersed in the car culture until the Ultima graces your garage

Thought I'd better add that I wasn't inferring that my driving skills would be up to the task of proving that statement wrong...

Before you mouth off to much,When you spend close to a mill on a car you get results and Carls car is a force to be reckoned with, have you driven it?To add, it's probably the most respected super gt car out there.
No I havent driven a Ultima, and have a huge respect for its capabilities.
Saying that put your money where your mouth is,build your Ultima and I'll be happy to meet you at the track.

Build - I gave up on that idea, only a single garage and all, thus I just bought one instead... just getting all the suspension mods lined up shortly...

Sure... just a little issue of distance to solve... so, in a few years then? :-)

Assuming there's any tracks (or petrol!) left in NZ by that stage

Anyone know what the track noise limits are in NZ?

Is Puke' really 95db or was someone pulling my leg?

Someones pulling your leg,a road going xr6 is doing more than that.
I'm sure by the time your kit car is down here,Hampton downs won't be a problem either,in the middle of nowhere.

Looks good, and unlikely to have many houses built around it anytime soon judging by the location...

wonder if the, err, 'tenants' of the Corrections facility will complain about the noise...

I wasn't meaning that Tuscan should be used as a racer but as a road-legal trackday car. It'd be pointless buying a Tuscan to race when you've got Carl's car around. It's the best Tuscan there is, period.

If you were comparing Carl's Tuscan to an Ultima you'd have to be fair and compare it to a race-prepped Ultima being used in a top motorsport arena - after all the Tuscan is in the top flight of NZ motorsport. I would put a lot of money on a decent Ultima GTR, like the one used recently in the British GT champs, easily beating all of the cars in the Super GT field and probably at less cost given the amount of money Carl has thrown at his Tuscan.

Please don't describe Ultimas as 'kit-cars' - they are not. They are component supercars at worst. The level of engineering and quality that goes into one is vastly superior to anything TVR does with the possible exception of the still-born Cerbera Speed 12. And that is from a hardened TVR man like me.

Ultimas have been gradually developed over twenty years including wind-tunnel testing and being used as a mule for the running gear in the Mclaren F1. Good enough for Mclaren, good enough for me!

I should of put a grin behind the "Kit car"as I was digging.
I think the Ultima is a awesome car and would love to see a racer down here.(the shape does'nt do it for me,imo)
Ive said the this before too,any tuscan racing against Carls car will always look like the poor cousin.
This one for sale is kind of in no mans land, comprimised racer and road car, nothing lots money can't sought out though.

Hi Jamie, can you tell me if the Tuscan is yellow or if not any details because I sold my racer to a guy in NZ last year and have lost contact. It was yellow at the time with a Rover 4.6 with Gems engine management. I think the guys name was John and he was intending to road rally the car, having previously used a supercharged MX5. Also my car was road legal over here in the U.K., well sort of anyway. Any info on the car or pics would be great.

Cheers, Al.

PS. There are some pics of it via the link on my profile.

Hi Tweety, yes the car is yellow and is fitted with a 4.6 motor.
It was advertised for a while on TradeMe (an NZ equiv. of Ebay) and then in NZ Classic Car although it's not on their website.

The chap I exchanged emails with was called Craig Flewellen and I'm not sure where he fitted in to the cars history. There can't be many yellow Tuscans converted for road-use in NZ though!

Craig is the guy John uses to look after his cars and he was supposed to be getting it ready for competition use once again.

The Hansen TVR is currently being rebuilt.
This is consisting of the new 750hp engine. New differential based on Fords 9". New steering rack. New front and rear uprights in billet alloy. These have revised bearings and stubs. Revised front and rear suspension geometry. Wider rear rims. Widened bodywork to cater for tyres. And a host of smaller bits and peices.

Did I read below a build comparison to an Ultima? Geez dude, its an out-and-out race car. Its not designed to drive to the gig then home again.
Remember the Ultima is still just another tube chassis with a plastic body on it - as every other car of similar ilk is.
