My friend who has lived in Auckland for about
20 years, is in hospital at the moment after getting scratched by a thorn while cutting back a bush in his garden!

The infection has spread to his bones and he is having to have intranvenous antibiotics. It will be some time before he is fully recovered.

The thorn was from some sort of rose, a poly-something-or-other (sorry my gardening knowledge is zero)
and there was me thinking NZ was a safe place to live, with no poisonous snakes, spiders or plants!

Wow - need to be real careful huh, I always try and wear rubber gardening gloves to avoid such issues. I believe it also has a lot to do with your chemical make-up in your body - your defence system. However this is the sort of thing that could be open to much debate. My aunt got bitten by a white tale spider and ended up with a small rash between her fingers which soon healed up. Other people not so lucky and having fingers removed. There are lots of nasty little beasties out there to be careful of. We are still better of than OZ though, don't fancy a brown snake curled up in the garden

Yeah, not aware of any poisonous roses... more likely that the prickle was just a route of infection... you'd be surprised at how many nasty bacteria live in the soil... an open wound to them can mean easy entry... and like Kylie said... if you're the right "type" of person.. then bam.,... can get quite serious

I think it's the bit that in older houses separated the garage from the house.... hence it is evil as it separates the car from me :P
