It’s a pity, must have taken a lot of red tape to tie down that many horsepower (Interesting that it could pass the submissions for and against but when it came to the health and safety people…). They get more racing action in Christchurch than we do in Wellington now (With just a hint of cynicism there).

I would certainly have went to see the Porsches racing and those little Toyota 4-Age powered cars (Whatever they are called). So this actually means that there isn’t a track in New Zealand big enough for the event? Any planned new race tracks or is that impossible now due to resource consent as well?

Yeah it's sad sad sad. The RMA is killing EVERYTHING in NZ.... Motorsport in particular.

You haave to realise that in the eyes of the general public (non-motorsport fans) that motorsport is noisy, smelly, dangerous, anti-social and encourages us to speed on the road killing innocent people.... no, really that's becoming the way it's seen... our sport has a MAJOR bad publicity rap and for no good reason.

Expect to see more of this in the future. There IS a major track being planned just south of Auckland at Hampton Downs to take up the slack of when Pukekohe closes and it's going to be a world class facility.... but depending on who you talk to it's either all going really well or it'sall going down the gurgler.

Yeah, shame the Wellington V8 thing didn't work out...I was looking forward to that. TBH, I'm amazed the plan got as far as it did...had it been the UK, the nanny state would have immediately stomped all over anyone even thinking about something as un-PC as that.

Going slightly O/T here, but where exactly is the nearest racetrack to Wellington? Somewhere that I can do trackdays ideally.

The reason being, I've given up trying to find another 944, and gone for the rice option. I'm picking it up this week...

I heard on the radio this morning they were also considering Whenuapai airstrip sp? located just behind me west side of Auckland city

They used to run classic trials there yrs ago with great success, make a fab track. Anyway shall wait and see.

Rice option 944? Is that a S4 RX-7? Do tell

And Kylie... if there's any truth to that it'd be fantastic

Here's $100 (for the first taker only ) on a bet that there will not be an Ozzie V8 race at Whenuapai within the next 5 years.

If you think the public in Wellington know how to things-up using the RMA you haven't seen anything until you've seen those who live near Whenuapai . . .

Well, on paper it's very similar to my old 944S. 2.5, four valves per cylinder, about 190 bhp, 2 plus 2 RWD coupe. No pop-up lights sadly, but it has two extra cylinders which makes up for it. 5-speed manual of course. They're fairly common here in NZ, but rare as hen's teeth in the UK Any guesses?

p.s. I forgot to say, nice looking Elise! Of course, as a former TR7 owner, I'm sad that the TVR7 project is being canned

only thing i can think of which fits that description would be a skyline GTS25....dunno if i'd compare one to a 944 though. skyline would be a fair bit lardier i'd think, especially an R33

Full marks to GravelBen And you're right, very similar on paper, but very different to drive. The 944 was just over 1300kg and felt very nimble and chuckable, the 'liner is another 100-150kg, I think, and doesn't have the 50/50 balance of the 944. Still good fun though.

Woulda been my guess too Wedgepilot

And thanks for the comments on the Elise... the TR7 is not TOTALLY canned... just on ice for the next year or two at present... still VERY keen to build a fire-breathing TR7 V8 at some point in the future... just want to enjoy a nice british sports car SOMETIME before I'm 30... hence the Elise

Well . . . the Ministry of Defence is a Requiring Authority under the RMA and as such do not need to obtain Resource Consents for their activities.

BUT - only on land that is designated and only for the purposes contained within the designation. Racing L.A.V.'s for training purposes would be one thing but the Ozzie V8's will end up in the Environment Court

Of course if I'm wrong it would be worth the $100

Glad to hear it... I sometimes still hanker after a TR7 V8 when I see a nice example
Then I remember all the rust problems I used to have with my 2.0 cars, not to mention the two engines I blew up

I wish someone would give Ruapuna a bucket load of cash to bring it's facilities and safety equip up to intetnational standards.
