Just wondering......youngest Son departs later today for 6 months in Wellington but his job means he'll need to be mobile. Whilst it won't be immediate, I have expectations of an 'urgent' message home saying he's found just the car he needs in the local ads. He knows about the WOF rules.

It'll be a semi-smoker motor of sorts, maybe 2/3000NZD. Any recommendations for a decent indie mechanic in the area who could be trusted not to rip-off a modestly daft 18 year old when the inevitable happens?

Thanks in advance!

I'm in Wellington. The only problem is, I'll probably steer him in the direction of something French or Italian wink

Where abouts in Wellington is he going to be working, and how much travelling?

Thanks for responding, he's tennis coaching based at a place called Khandallah but he's expecting to be going to other sites in the area with bags full of kit.

You and he would get on fine, his first bike was an Aprillia, his current car here is a Citroen and Dad has been through more Alfas than is healthy!

He's in the air now so I'll know more over the next week or so but would imagine he's going to want to do some exploring of both N & S Islands during his stay.

Just saw this. I'm in Khandallah, and there's a good garage there (Khandallah Garage, oddly enough). They do a good job and don't mess you about.

Is he still looking for a car?

Thanks for responding, yes he got himself a car almost immediately, found it locally on Trade-Me. (A Daihatsu Sirion of all things! They made a limited edition one for the UK with 120 bhp and 4wd called a Rallye 4, I had one here for a bit of local hooning. His logic was that if the one he bought broke, dad could fix it over the phone!)

Finding half decent accommodation is the next challenge!

Any other Wgtn'ans here?

I only just found PH after researching stuff on 325ti's prior to buying one... what a goldmine!

The end of his NZ adventure approaches and he's had a ball.

The little Sirion he bought hasn't missed a beat and has taken him all over North Island without fuss. He bought it through Trade-Me, I guess the obvious place to sell?

Saw the wee thing parked in the tennis court's car park.

Yes, for selling, TradeMe, Turners (auction house) or park it somewhere prominent with a notice in the window.

Glad he enjoyed himself. Where does his next adventure take him?

Such a small world!😉

Thanks for the window sign tip, hadn't even thought of that.

Back to Blighty in a months time (via the mandatory Oz stopover) for the summer on Solent safety boat duties then in theory off to Uni.

Tough life!

Are you in Khandallah as well then?

I'd avoid Turners for selling. I tried for a quick sale with my old car, but the auctions only seemed to attract time wasters. I put it on Trademe and sold it within 24hrs for $1k more than the top Turners bid.

Thanks for that, over to him now, he's even cleaned it for some photos!

This was the inspiration for his slightly unusual choice of motor, the 4wd Rallye created in small numbers for Daihatsu UK that is still loitering in my barn!

Pity it's uninsurable fiscally for an 18 year old!
