Its great for the local V8 super car fans to see the kiwi do it in style again as done previously two yrs ago. The most suprising thing to me was the outcome of the resurfacing and modifications done to the track. This included flattening out some of the ripple strips enabling drivers to set new personal bests and track records. Am looking forward to getting on that track myself to check it out.

Interesting to see that the Toyota class series cars are a fraction faster than the V8's though.

Also when the rain came late in the day those guys were still up there doing 60 sec laps in the WET!! Thats hair raising stuff. Not many performance cars can do that in the dry!

Lets hope Wellington or Pukekohe gets to host them again for next year.

Why are you surprised that big 4 door sedans are slower (although marginally) than purpose built light weight high tech single seaters?

What does a V8 supercar weigh in at anyways? They have to be lighter than NASCAR (around 3000lbs, ~1400kgs!), which are just plain comical on the two road courses they do.

I wasn't all that surprised by their wet times, afterall, it was drying quickly, and since Pukekohe is a power track with lots of straights and few corners, the difference between wet and dry for them would naturally be slower. But good racing nonetheless.

YAAAAWWWWN. It's about time they opened up the V8s to other marques. Audi A8/A6/A4, Jaguar XJ, American barges, Lexus, BMWs etc etc - much more fun. Oh yeah, that would sh*t on Ford and Holdens strawberries wouldn't it?

Those Toyota single seaters looked good and were a damn site cheaper to buy and run than the F3 cars we have in Europe. They do need a V6 or small capacity V8 though for the full sonic effect. A turbo wouldn't go amiss either, like the Formula Palmer (Audi) series in the UK - 30secs of overboost per race!

Why can't Murph' translate his Pookie results into wins in all the other rounds? He seems to be a bit of an underachiever elsewhere. Nice bloke to meet though.

Yeah they used to run with other cars like you mentioned yrs ago, but made it exclusive to Holden and Ford as the Jap cars were cleaning up, bit of a political thing. Its a real shame as I too think its boring seeing the same cars out there.

Yeah I miss the old Grp. A days... the ford-holden battle does nothing for me but it's what the public wants to see unfortunately..... Mitsubishi Australia have been trying to campaign a Magna in the V8 supercars for YEARS... given that the Magna is partially designed and entirely built locally and they can use a Chrysler (same company) pushrod 5L V8 to compete with the similar engines as used in the ford/holdens, but AVESCO keeps shutting them out of it... really a shame as it's completely without reason and totally against the spirit of competition.... Mind you, when you've got full crowds of people at the gates every race meeting and international TV companies clamouring over themselves to get a piece of your action and merchandising stands looking like a hiroshima aftermath at the end of sunday raceday... where's the motivation to change?

I remember watching Bathurst in the 1980s and seeing everythings from Sierras, Commodores, SD1s, Maserati Biturbos, Mitsi Starions, Nissan Skylines and toyota corollas all blatting up and down the mountain, made for a FANTASTIC spectacle.... These days the drivers complain about backmarkers being too slow in the Aussie V8s... in those days you'd have a 250km/h Sierra blasting the doors off a 160km/h corolla down conrod... now THAT'S driving skill.

So do they actually literally restrict it to Ford and Holden? Or is it just creative rules?

Besides, its not like Ford is exactly an Australian company, not to mention Holden and GM!

It always annoys me when people go on and on about the Skyline beating everything at Bathurst (usually it's from people who don't realise other cars exist). Truth is the Skylines only really won when it was wet. the rest of the time most of the killing was being done by the RS500 Sierras.

But anyway, yeah I think the rules state Australian built(and a certain amount), rear wheel drive 5 litre pushrod V8 (even thought its not in the roadcars anymore) large 4 door sedans. doesnt really let anyone else in.

I'd love it if they expanded a bit, include Lexus/Audi/BMW and a few others. Of course, then the Falcodores would be losing again and the Aussie public don't like that. on the bright side, it always good close racing and a pretty even playing field for the drivers.

edit to say: just realised this isnt the forum people were going on about the skylines on. lol. ahh well.

at Levels raceway (Timaru) the Toyotas best was a 59.somthing, less than half a second quicker than the Porsche GT3 lap record. NZ V8 tourer record a 1:07 or so. tight track makes a big difference.

Gravelben: True to a degree.. the Skylines weren't all-conquering all the time in the ATCC (as it was then) but they were still a force in the dry... And remember here I'm also talking about PRE Skyline GTR days here... I used to LOVE the R31 Skylines as a kid in Peter Jackson livery driven by George Fury and a young Glen Seton... they were one of those cars that would either win or break down.

When the GTR came along it really swept all before it... True the Sierras had its measure on occasions and let's not forget that the Commodores were still competitive too... on many an occasion Walkinshaw commodores crossed the line first, it just removed the commodore as the dominating force in the series.

Looking back on that era I'd LOVE to have a Sierra, that's the car that stands out for me today, but there's still a lot of respect for the GTR because back then they really were the dog's bollox.

Creative rules me thinks....

probably homolagation rules specify 8 cylinders and 500 production units as fully licensed taxis

Just my .02c. Miss europe for GT and Endurance racing

haha thats getting a bit before my time, never saw those race. but point taken tho, having not been very big at that stage most of what I've seen is the historic-type media stuff which tends to show GTR's in the wet and Sierras in the dry.

just imagine what a Porsche 956 could do around Bathurst!

Hey I didn't say all of the bumps they made a good start though.
Didn't get the invite to Gillettes corporate box this yr so we didn't end up going, just watched from home. What track day are you doing, will then check the calender see if I can come. Car needs its cobwebs cleaned out. I know of 2 Esp V8 owners desperate for a track day, so long as its not a public session, too many kids out there trashing max power cars thinking they are F1 drivers, not my scene am afraid if you know what I mean.

Edited to add...if you are doing a public session will still come out for a drive anyway, nice to catch-up.
