Any NZ patent attorneys here?

Sizing up an opportunity and appreciating how long any piece of string is, I'm trying to work out what sort of salary for a UK and European qualified Attorney with a couple of years PQE would sensibly command. Location would be Auckland, although might be able to look at Christchurch, which I guess is cheaper to live in.

Christchurch house prices are pretty alarming (especially considering the almost complete lack of central heating), Auckland house prices are jaw dropping.

Thanks. House prices are like that in most places these days, and I'd keep the place in blighty in case of return or for future sale.

Different tack then, if the average wage is about $50k, is double that comfortable in most places (setting aside the piece of string etc)? 2 adults, one kid, 2 cars (obvs), no specific vices other than an intent to see/ use the great oft discussed outdoors NZ offers.

Fisher & Paykel in Auckland have been advertising a job in the CIPA journal for ages now. I am always suspicious of long-time advertised posts!

Thanks, those numbers are not great!

F&P have been advertising directly for yonks too, with no bites [they wanted, at least]. Awkward part of Auckland tbh, and the job sounds pretty basic and tedious (I spoke to Adamsons), which is saying something in IP!

Interesting how many others have been advertising though, Jaws etc, obviously there is demand for the service at the moment.

I was surprised myself at the modest salaries on offer in NZ.

I got calls recently testing my interest in Airbus at Filton and Addidas in Germany, but I'm not inclined to go to either.

The market has gone nuts the last few years but still..

Bought my house 12 years ago for $580, now worth around $850, Christchurch, Sumner.

Seaside village, on the hills 25min from the CBD, Ocean and mountain views. I can be walking in the hills in 5min, or surfing at Scarborough, or biking across the hills. Unless I've gone snowboarding or something else...

I cant even imagine somewhere like this in the Uk let alone afford to live there!

As to house affordability you can get a decent place in chc for $500k ish, how affordable it all is depends on what you are bringing over cash. If you have a 10% deposit there a $450k mortgage now would set you back $2225 a month, so about $35k of income to cover that.

Add in $3-4k pa for Council rates, $3k for electricity, $2k for insurance (house/contents), $1200 for phone/internet so another $10k on top so say $45k for those bits.

I dont have kids so no idea what they cost, but afik you do end up paying extra for school even state schools and they are always doing stuff which must cost..
