In NZ on working holiday visa - work advice needed!
Discussion
Hi all
I'm over from Scotland with my girlfriend on a years working holiday visa and am currently in Queenstown.
I've only been in NZ for one month and planned on getting work in Queenstown but it seems coming here early (before the winter season kicks off) has not paid off. The place is so quiet and there is no work!
So, I'm now sending out my CV to agencies in other towns/cities on the south island (Dunedin, Christchurch) and will apply for any jobs I can see online.
Ideally I would like to get into construction/labouring as manual work appeals after spending the last 6 years working at a desk for banks.
Any advice on where to head to/what to look out for would be very much appreciated.
I know Christchurch seems the obvious choice as there is a lot of work being done on the city after the earthquake. I would be happy to move there and spend a few months working.
I would also consider work on the North island although ideally I would like to work on the South island since I am already here. Hopefully I can pick up work on the North island when we head there to visit.
I don't have any specific experience in labouring or construction work but am very keen to break into this industry and am willing to give anything a go.
If this is not possible at this time, I'd be keen to hear of any other suggestions as to what work may be available (both North and South islands)?
In the past month we've hired a car and drove down from Auckland, stopping off at Lake Taupo, Hamner Springs and Lake Tekapo. I love NZ so far and some of the drives have been amazing. Even in a Nissan Sunny Auto in hire car White!
Also seen a nice range of cars, many of which would have rotten away with the salt on UK roads. Being in NZ makes we want a nice V8 pick up!
Thanks in advance for any info, it is very much appreciated.
Jon.
