I'm trying to bring my 2003 Audi S4 4.2 V8 into NZ when I come over in april for a couple of years. I've been asked whether the car is 'Euro 4 compliant' - and haven't the foggiest what that means. Googling doesn't help one bit - nothing. And despite what the import guy has told me, there's nothing on my registration document. What on earth is Euro 4 and does my car comply?

Euro 4 is an emissions standard.

From this table here, it would seem your S4 is Euro 3.... which means it doesn't qualify.

There are different rules for importing a car than there are for an immigrant bringing one with you when you move here. If you already owned the car overseas you may be exempt from some of the requirements if you meet other requirements and commit not to sell it for a year.

I have a British import 2003 S4 V8 manual. The previous owner owned it in the UK and brought it over with him. As far as I can tell he had no trouble bringing it in.

VW and Audi started to change to Euro 4 in 2001, but some models lagged behind so if you don't qualify for baggage vehicle status you'll need to check. This is the website you need:
http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/

Use the top search function: Find fuel consumption and emissions information on a new or used car

You can also look on the silver VIN number sticker underbonnet. It should say EU4 or EU3 in the corner.
