I was born and raised there but moved away 20+ years ago. Caroline Bay is quite pretty on a nice day - playgrounds and a safe swimming beach.... Very compact main street (all the shops are contained within 3 blocks). Some nice rivers in the area but you need to know where to go. Centennial Reserve in town (Otipua Rd) has nice picnic spots. Used to spend hours fishing off the wharf as a kid...
As above , there's a few nice cafes now on the bay hill and country cafes too. It's worth going to pleasant point just for their massive ice creams and with a bit of luck the steam strain could be running and taking rides that day too. The bay is now really great and full of new stuff, Sunday morning markets down there aren't bad either.
