Today will see the final rounds of Motorsport New Zealands Tier 1 Championships.
I cann't help think it is likely to be a bit of a hollow victory for those who win their series, as there are not the cars there. It hasn't helped with the split of the NZV8 and V8Supertours, but the writting has been on the wall for a couple of years. I my opinion, Motorsport New Zealand have not listened to the drivers/teams or the paying public and now have a series that struggle to attract two men and their dog. It was all about TV to a point, and as we get payed first why should we listen to you, we're alright. Back in the '80's you could get $350.00 for winning that Formula Ford race. Drivers could just about run their cars on the prize money! Now you get nothing. The class/standard of racing is good, but has no depth, 6 cars here, 8 cars there ....
Well Done to those who do win their classes today, but shame on you Motorsport New Zealand!

Haven't watched much of it this season but I actually really enjoyed Formula Ford last year, thought it was the best racing of the lot. TRS has also been good but they're kinda separate from the rest now anyway.

Best move this year IMO was combining the Sport Saloon/OSCA type classes into races with the Production and GT classes, made for some interesting racing.

I second that Ben. Personally my favourite type of racing is where all the cars are different, like Targa, OCSA/NZGT etc.

Saw footage of an NZ V8 round at Timaru and almost laughed at the amount of cars they had on the grid, ten Ford's and Holdens... I remember the days where they had more cars on the grid than V8 Supercars?

Since i'm here, a big gripe of mine is the useless TV coverage of NZ Motorsport, in regards to results screens/race lineup screens etc.

How freaking hard is it to put the TYPE of car along with the drivers name and number? They have the room, but if (like me) you don't know Joe Bloggs from Alfred E Neuman, then you have no idea who was racing what. Even in Ford and Holden races.

Last footage of OSCA/GT's i saw, half of the cars in the race lineup screen were listed under the driver name (even though some could have done with a bit more info/accuracy?) and a fair few had no name at all.

It really seems amateurish to me, they way they keep making mistakes/omissions in the details screens during coverage.

Maybe i should apply for that job.

  • sigh*

Yeah I got rid of Sky sport for exactly that reason, the home of motorsport, I don't think so. Half an hour of WRC coverage and three hours for darts! I think I've mentioned that before. All you ever seem to get is "the big three" sports with no coverage of anything else. There's so much going on in the wide world of sports and we just never get any of it.

I have to agree with you on the Production and GT class having the field made up of the local drivers in some very quick machines. One that had me smiling was a green DX Corolla with a turbo, very quick!
And then the was the 2 NZ Production Cars, what a joke.
Has Motorsport New Zealand not realised that they have the classes wrong? Look at how big the fields are in the BMW E30 Series. The Kumho Series in the South Island....

hehe Sure is (Nissan SR20 powered from memory), Matt Dunn knows how to drive it too. His brother Chris is also very fast in the turbo Hayabusa powered MR2 when it isn't breaking down.

There are some clever people down in the south. lol
But my point is most of the good large grids are non Motorsport New Zealand run. Why does Msnz have to feel as they know best and run the top classes? Clearly they are doing a bad job of it. Now they are trying to have a go at the V8 Supertours, claiming that the people behind it toke information when they left NZV8. If you change jobs, the information you have learnt that your old employer goes with you.

It was a bit more than that..... I can't say much, but the group that started up V8ST did a bit more than just take some knowledge with them.

That is because there were a lot of very unhappy teams, so they voted with their feet.
Lets not forget, people like Garry Pedersen have forgoten more that many of the fat cats at Motorsport New Zealand will even know. So stolen information, I think not.
