Hi,

I've had enough of the UK and will be heading back to NZ late next year.
As a result I'm thinking about bringing back a car, mainly to sell on and make a bit of cash when I get back.
I understand that I have to own it for a year over here to bring it in tax free, so was hoping to get something that would be a bit interesting in the meantime.
Was originally looking at a 996 911, but was put off by the various bore scoring, IMS RMS issues etc, the more you read about them the scarier it gets.
Pretty much open to suggestions, been looking at anything from Fiat 500 Abarths, up to Jag XKRs, limit is about £20k..
So anyone got any ideas??

You'll save the GST (15%) if you own it for a year - there's no other taxes to pay anyway regardless of how long you've owned it.

Buying brand new saves most (at your posted buy in price) because you save 20% VAT and only put 15% back on when it lands so you're 5% up from the off. Tie that in with a healthy new car discount and you've got yourself a very tidy saving.

The more you spend the more you save - there's no point in paying $5000 shipping, insuring, miscellaneous costs on a $10k car, it becomes 50% of the cost.

Spread those same costs over a $50,000 car and it's only 10% - $100,000 = 5% etc etc

Look for cars with mismatched new car prices between UK and NZ - Porsche, Land Rover + Lotus are good examples but maybe out of your reach.

As a TVR owner and fan, how about a newer Chimera, Tuscan, T350 ? I'm told the older wedges are (relatively) cheap in UK right now too. They are all very quick, fun to drive, and most Kiwis haven't a clue what they are. There are a few around already but pretty rare....

Ah, TVRs, hadn't thought of that. Always quite liked the Cerbera, not too sure how much demand there would be should I bring one across. I really want something I can offload fairly easily once I'm over.
Hadn't really thought about bringing a brand new car over. To be honest, most "interesting" cars are out of my budget brand new. I'm bringing an XA coupe I found over here back with me, so need something else to go in the container with it to make it worth my while.
Still tempted by a 996, but worried by the fraility of the standard motor, however if I could find a reasonably priced turbo in good nick, that could possibly be worth a crack.

I'm sure the problem would be a limited market here, but look at the price difference: surely a $40,000+ saving once landed?

I reckon that whilst not many know the older ones (like my wedge), quite a lot know about the newer ones & styles, as they appeared in the racing games.

For an idea of prices, there has been a Chimaera 4.0 (spelling?) for sale on trademe recently at 35 grand, and a Cerbera 500 at 45,000 (from memory - correct me somebody if it's wrong).
An S3 2.9 was up at 15 grand (all NZ dollars) for only about 2 weeks, which means it probably sold.

But you're right, probably not the easiest make to offload quickly.

Watch the TVR's for chassis rot. They were poorly powder coated and as they are a cheap supercar they tend to be not well looked after.
To get a TVR into the country you'll require SIV exemption, which requires you to keep the car for four years. Similarly the older Lotus will require SIV.
If you're after a bit of money from the import I'd personally be looking at the lower end Astons, or perhaps a sports Jag. Your 911 choice should also be a good selection to make a little money.

The TVR Cerbera advertised on TM wasn't a 500 (there is no such thing), but a non complied 4.2 Cerbera (not in the best condition). It cost me 60k to import a late 4.5 into the country and get it on the roads. It's also a car that you can't afford to miss a service, will niggle at you with electrical faults and will scare you with running costs..... Hey... it's a hand built supercar what else can you expect?

It does however look stunning, and throws power and noise around enough to scare (or excite) small children and old ladies..... I must admit to have started looking for open car windows to throw a double declutch, throttle blip into.

There's been an uncomplied Cerb for sale at 38k on Trade Me for months. It can be registered by a new owner under SIV I'm told by NZTA. I'd definitely be looking at something more mainstream for what you've said are your criteria in this.

Going to have to look into this SIV thing a bit more, never heard of it before.
The TVR thing was pretty left field, but has got me thinking maybe an XKR, had one before, absolutely brilliant car for the money and they seem to be fetching pretty decent money in NZ. The newer shape ones are now dropping into the low 20s over here, so with a bit of negotiation I think I would be able to get a nice one within my budget...

Where are you getting your sale prices from? Just be aware there's a lot of very optimistic asking / start prices on Trade Me and from dealers - a wee tip, use the 'advanced' search option on trade me to see closed listings, and what cars have actually sold for.

You'll only make a bit of cash if you keep it for a further two years unless you pay the import tax when it arrives. You'll be expected to sign a customs form agreeing to the 2 year undertaking and telling you, in black and white, how much tax you'll be immediately liable for should you sell it during that 2 year period.

Paying the tax upfront leaves you with no restriction on when you can sell. Additionally, if you've owned it for less than 12 months then there is a sliding scale on how much tax you'll need to pay allowing for depreciation.

I see the regs have changed quite a bit since I brought mine in.....not surprised as it's been a few years !

Sorry about the Cerb 500...I reckon it must have been a Griffith. My memory is going...

Redmist - Perhaps I was lucky, but my wedge still has most of its powder coat. My understanding was that the very early wedges were poor, but the later grey ones were actually pretty good. It could be that fact that the engine (V6) tends to leak oil....
