Hi guys do any of you have direct leads to large dynamic construction companies or companies requiring part-time specialists/contractors in the south island? Sort of stuff we are looking for:

- Project management - hands on level
- Weld inspection, Non destructive testing coordination
- Boiler making - Pressure equipment
- Tower cranes - assembly/dismantle
- High profile heavy lifts
- Scaffolding

Rumour has it that Fletchers has the monopoly for CHCH rebuild at the moment (please correct me), but many have turned down work as tickets are heavily clipped, so no incentive. However, we do know there is still lots of projects outside the zone so we are pretty open minded. We are in final stages of finishing up an outage shut for Contact Energy - Otahuhu and Stratford sites. Will be after June/July till we get down.

Reason for move to SI, is that I have a wee bubba boy (PHer in the making) and if all goes to plan he will arrive in September. smile Pretty exciting stuff never thought id be a mum and make time to paint art again. I clearly need to be parked up for a while close to family but my partner will need to work. The winterless north and boating/scuba diving heaven will surely be missed.

Hi Kylie - Congratulations on your news

There isnt much work actually started yet - I saw in the paper the other day theres still 900 buildings in the CBD to be demolished.

Fletchers are managing a lot of domestic repair work for EQC (smallish stuff - under $100k)

Hawkins Construction are working with IAG (NZI and State)
Mainzeal with Vero
They are both large commercial insurers as well as domestic - commercial stuff seems to be where your partner is aiming
Arrow working with AMI- this is probably domestic work only

No doubt they will all have projects directly with developers too once work in CBD starts

Then there will be all the infrastructure work which is being done by Fulton Hogan, Fletchers, McConnell Dowell, Downer and City Care for CCC
Lyttelton Port has a lot of damage - not sure who is doing that work
QE2 stadium, town hall, convention centre - assume these are all CCC owned

Try this for starters http://careers.hawkins.co.nz/

Plenty of opportunities and we still have a few roads here which are drivable and pretty much empty.... if you dont mind the odd aftershock

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I'm a Project Manager in the construction industry, considering emigrating to NZ, and rather than start another thread, thought I'd ask in here about the state of the construction industry in NZ?

Is it bouyant? Are their opportunities available for PM's?

My old plan was to complete my Project Management degree / and charter into the CIOB by 2013 and then emigrate then, with professional quals / memberships.

However continued unemployment over here is rapidly making that plan redundant, so all I have is 17 years experience, mainly in new build / fit out, commercial / leisure / education / office. Some limited civils, some house building experience.

It's currently about as buoyant as a cement seal.

There is actually a lot of work that needs to be done but for various reasons most of it is stalled or on a bit of a go-slow. Things should turn around but when exactly is anyone's guess.
