My K-Series 2003 Elise 111s has a fried ECU due to a faulty solenoid. The K4 units seem to be nigh on impossible to locate. Does anyone in NZ have any suggestions on replacement. The Emerald unit is out of the question because it does not have enough inputs to handle the air con. Not looking for performance gains I just want to be able to go over 5500 rpm!

Is it repairable? I used this company to repair my Audi ABS unit:

Your part isn't listed, but there are many others, for example:

Rover Engine Control Unit
1999+ Rover 75 KV V6
Bosch unit - damaged by HT coil failure

Well we are not sure but it's going to be sent off for investigation so hopefully yes.

Take the ECU out and send the whole unit to these guys in Albany or just drop your car off there as I have done before.... KW Historics in Auckland refer their Lotus ECU problems to them. I have heard of them rebuilding fully fried ECU's before with luck! So worth a try. IMO they have looked after me and saved me thousands!! excellent and professional to deal with. http://www.ecu.co.nz/ Ohhhh and I see they have updated their webby on customers rides !

Dave, I thought the Emeralds were able to handle the aircon too, or will they just run out of outputs?

I seem to remember the K6 was up to the task, but I didn't look into it too closely. I know that others in the UK are using it on Elises with air-con, but unsure whether the VVC cars use up some of the inputs you need to have spare to run the aircon.

Have you looked into the new unit being pedalled by EliseParts? It's supposed to be a step up from the Emerald in terms of complexity.

Locally, a Link G4 should be up to the task, with plenty of local knowledge to know how to tune.

Link G4 storm should be ok, but if you need more I/O, then the Xtreme will have more than enough! Unsure if they run Rover VVC, but they're a NZ company so feel free to contact them and ask. www.linkecu.com .

I'm running a Motec M800 on mine, which can handle it all easily, but budget about $12k to get one of those installed and running a K well.

The Emerald ECU doesn't have enough inputs to control the air con and to install the Link ECU the local company I contacted wanted about $4k which is frankly ridiculous. I'll probably send it up to Auckland and see if that ECU.co.nz company can fix it.

Then I'd be looking at the eliseparts one as that is a higher end solution than the emerald and should be plug and play, hence the only cost should be in the tune.

Well the ECU was fixed for $180.....however I still have fault code P1492 rather then P1491/P1492. Any suggestions?

Some ECU's need to reset themselves after several drives and start-ups depending on what the code is of course. A quick google here referenced to Seloc suggests some good info below, if it were me id post up on Seloc and see how others have gone about it too to get consistent opinions. Great news about gettimg the ECU going again too btw you just got to be patient with these things:

I actually took it down to Ray Hartley to flash the ECU fault codes. P1491 went away but P1492 remained. Checked the VVC replacement solenoid - it has a slightly high resistence but nothing major. The VVc was working mechanically BUT when it was fully advanced the engine was making this nasty tapping noise (something that I had noticed while the engine idles) so they are going to have a squiz at the inside of the engine to make sure everything is ok with regards to cam timing etc etc.
