I'm really pleased to advise everyone that Johnny Cargo who some of you will already know has decided to start up his own independant garage specialising in Alfa, Fiat and Lancia.

Johnny has been Mervyn Stewarts top mechanic for longer than I can remember, and has certainly kept me right over the years. He is top of his field in ALL current Alfa and Fiat models being both an Alfa Master Technician and a Fiat Master Technician (he is the only independant mechanic that can claim this) and has all the equipment to carry out work on any current model. Plus as he has worked on Fiat/Alfa for so many years he has great insight into older models. He can carry out any work on any model, and can re-build Alfa 156 engines with his eyes closed!

Johnny will be based in the Lisburn area and is currently putting the premises together. He plans on opening doors in April. He will be vat registered so any work carried out using genuine parts will not void any warranty.

Guys I've known Johnny for years, and admit he's a good friend but I'm posting this up because I truly believe this is a bit special. How many times have there been posts placed on here looking for a good indy. Johnny's not only good he's the best, there is no other Master tech that I know is a Fiat/Alfa independant, other mechanics go to him when they are stuck, I know, I've put them on to him.
I'm sure M Stewarts are gutted at losing him, I would be but Johnny felt the time is right to move on.
He will be having an open night once things are set up so I will advise of this when the time comes.

I wish him good fortune in his new venture.

As far as I know, it should make no difference. VAT registration is (to my knowledge) entirely based upon personal preference (for small turnover) or if you have a turnover above something in the region of £65k.

Anyhow, could you pm me contact details? I am considering buying an alfa and it would be good to have someone I can call and maybe go to give it the quick once over.

Many thanks

Some warranty companies including AA claims initially insisted that the company performing warranty work should be Vat registered.
When it was explained that our local TVR specialist was not they overuled this as it saved them having to ship cars to England for warranty work.
They can have non Vat registered companies perform work if it suits all parties.

For anyone interested Johnny is holding an opening night this Wednesday and everyone is invited.

His place is on the Moira road just out of Lisburn. If heading from lisburn direction on the main road just as you reach the business estate were SERE car sales is, turn right into the estate, go to the very top of the road and turn left, follow the road about 100 feet and you come to another set of business units, turn into the units on the right and your there, the last unit.

From memory, most car manufacturers will allow you to use a non franchised mechanic for servicing etc, providing they are VAT registered.
