Hey guys,

I am looking at possibly buying a classic car. I thought that would be excellent because of the reduced premiums for insurance... unfortunately, this is NI which actually should be spelt 'NO'. Most of the companies are not interested. I do know that Aon are supposed to have a policy but is there anyone else who does a classic policy covering Northern Ireland?

Thanks

Adam

Try Campbells in Coleraine, They insure my Mk1 Mr2 and 996 and are reasonable and friendly.

I am having a nightmare... I was led to believe that classic insurance was inexpensive. No chance! It is cheaper to insure the car on a traditional policy!

What sort of car are you trying to insure mate? I have an MX5 with Footman James. £135 a year for 5000 mile limit.

Had my car on classic insurance from Campbells of coleraine but found it much cheaper on ordinary insurance. Advantages of classic they pay the amount the car is valued at if it is written off, disavantage is you cant build up a no claims bonus so the insurance will rise in price every year.

I am trying to insure a 911.

Autoline supposedly go via CCCinsurance and they have quoted me 550 for a 3000 mile policy. Footman James I will try but they specifically exclude NI when you read their terms and conditions.

I appreciate the pros and cons. The no claims isn't a big deal because it means the bonus can be used on the everyday car. If it cost £300 odds to do, then it works ok in that regard. But if it costs the same as a normal policy... I am not at all sure! I would sooner not be tied down to the need to garage the car and do less than 3k miles!

I think most insurers expect you to have an everyday car insured in your name as well as the classic.Being a member of the owners club also helps.I had classic insurance here from Footman James for a Jaguar a couple of years ago. They are part of AON now.

As above. Footman James expected me to join the MX5 Owner's Club, for a fee of £20 for the year and you do have to have use of another vehicle to qualify. You should have no problems insuring the MR2,it's certainly a classic in my opinion and is old enough to satisfy the credentials.

I have two other vehicles (one for normal everyday, the other for when extra seats or room is needed)! I am a member of PCGB so that is not a problem....

What turns out to be the real issue is the age. A nice guy from footman james put in some numbers and played about a bit and concluded that, inspite of being if a series of cars considered classic, the fact that is was late in the production means that it is actually only considered a future classic. With a bit more digging, it seems that 15 years is when most classics start quoting and 20 is really where you need to be for all the porsche ones to get interested. It is a bit silly really, the car is just as classic as the identical car built the year before but that is how it goes!

So the best I can get is about £600 via CCC (or autoline, depending how you spin it). It is not ideal, it is high and it limits my mileage quite considerably. However... it gets the ball rolling and why let that spoil the adventure!? All I have to do now is cross my fingers that the inspection on the car comes through clean and that the dealer doesn't turn around and ask for more money!
